Is Windermere the best location for seeing the Lake...

I would like to see as much of the Lake District as possible, but will only have about 3 days. I am planning on taking a train from London. Is Windermere the best place to stay?

Hi

I live in the North of England and know the Lakes well. Personally Windermere would be the last place I would stay! But that is becuase it is the tourist hot spot of the area and I prefer peace and quiet. However - I need to know more before I answer your question. Most important question - will you have a car? I hope you are saying yes to this! Also what are your reasons for visiting this area -are you planning on doing some walking etc. Three days will be fine to see plenty. However, I cannot answer your question if you plan to use public transport. I am sure there are others who say this is possible. I disagree completely - you need a car! Also do you have somewhere to stay? If not, are you after Hotel, B and B, Farm stay?

I don't know where the train goes in the Lake District, but Windermere certainly is in the middle of everything. Depending on time of year it can be chockablock full of tourists.

I agree with morgana, Windermere is a nice place, but so full of tourists, I prefer the quieter places, Coniston, Derwent water and surrounding area are good places to visit with lovely walks, if that is what you would like.

A car is a must to take full advantage of the area, you could take a picnic and stop at one of the lakes there are some quiet picnic spots to be had and enjoy the scenery, if you have a car you would be able to do the area in 3 days no problem.

I'm planning on going in the Spring. I mentioned the train because I do not want to drive in London. I want to see the English countryside and after seeing pictures of the Lake District I thought that would be a perfect trip. I want to stay at a B & B.

You didn't answer the question about whether you are willing to drive within the Lake District or not. If you aren't, you will have to depend on buses, in which case you will have to change your criterion of seeing as much of the Lake District as possible, to something more realistic and focussed.

I have done some busing in the Lake District, service is pretty good, but you have to plan carefully. I would choose Ambleside or Keswick over Windermere, if I was doing a bus-based holiday. Stagecoach Northwest, http://www.stagecoachbus.com/northwest/ operates the bus services in this area.

That is excellent advice from Diz. If you were in Ambleside, and there on the right day, you could take one of the free guided walks. You can check out their schedule online (through the ark service). But they only did that twice a week when we were there. Also, at Ambleside you can catch the boat down Lake Windermere. Either do a return or do the 7-mile walk back to Ambleside.

There is a railway station in Windermere so it is a good point to aim for from London if you don't want to drive. I wouldn't stay in Windermere as it is far too commercialised. We use Ambleside as a base as there is plenty of good walking, either nice and easy low level or lung bursting stuff and any combination in between. For 3 days you could certainly keep yourself busy in and around Ambleside assuming you enjoy walking.

Hi....Use Windermere as a base and spend one day in Windermere, one in Ambleside and surrounding area and one in Grasmere...that way you'll get a feel for the whole area. The infra-structure in Windermere is far better to use as the base area, a train & bus staion, lots of bars and restaurants, 2 villages and of course the lake. Stay in Windermere village rather than Bowness which can get mobbed!

Windermere is a good spot for a base especially if you're just coming for a few days from London by train. Change at Oxenholme, and you get the train straight into Windermere station and be within a few minutes walk of the lake. I'm not sure where else you could easily do that within the National Park.
