Where to stay with no car

We are presently carless and will be arriving in Penrith next week for my husbands birthday.

Where would we be best to stay? Keswick, Ullswater, any other ideas.

It would need to be somewhere where we can walk to a lake and pub\restaurant. If anyone has any idea of tour companies where we can still have a tour of the lakes whilst we are there I would really appreciate it.

Many thanks for all your help.

Depends on your priorities.

Keswick would be a great place to stay in some respects. You have a good choice of pubs, restaurants, and shops all within walking distance. You can also walk to the lake (Derwent Water), and even walk all the way round it if you are so minded.

You can also walk up some hills starting from Keswick, although if hillwalking is your thing it may not be the best place to stay. Glenridding (on Ullswater) would be better in that case, as there are some fantastic walks you can do from there without needing a car, such as Helvellyn and many lesser peaks. You can also take the Ullswater Steamers to Howtown and have a splendid walk back round Ullswater from there. Glenridding, however, although it has a couple of places to eat and drink, doesn't have anything like the choice you'll get in Keswick.

I'd agree with Nautius Maximus on Keswick, principally because it is the hub of the bus network so you can get to most other places in the Lakes without a car. You've also got Derwent Water which has a boat services, plenty of restaurants and cafes, cycle hire and an easy off road cycle route to Threlkeld and a number of walks straight out of town.

Ullswater is nice in itsself, has a bus to and from Penrith and a steamer service but overall offers fewer carless possibilities.
