Dogs are allowed on buses and trains. Most country pubs will also allow dogs. You'd need to check the accommodation though

The lakes are generally dog friendly and there are border collies everywhere. The pet shop in Keswick (Google it as I can't remember the name) has an online list of pet friendly accomiodation.

Just be careful to keep your dog on a lead if walking near sheep unless you are certain that he won't try and round them up!

We have stayed at the Royal oak Hotel in Borrowdale with our collie.

Dogs are generally allowed on buses and trains, but they do need a ticket, if booking in advance make sure they know you have a dog with you.

The Coledale Inn in Braithwaite and the Mary Mount Hotel on Derwentwater are extremely dog friendly and allow pets in the bedrooms.

British trains do NOT require dogs to have tickets.

Some British bus companies do not permit dogs at all - though all those near me do, and I'd be amazed if Lake District companies restricted them, but it's good to check.

It IS worth remembering that some Muslims are profoundly offended by proximity to dogs (though I can't find any support for this anti-dog obsession in my copy of the Koran). Taking dogs on inter-city trains might put such people in a difficult position, and any train from Bristol to the Lakes will go through the West Midlands. Whatever you might think of their views, at the very least it's as thoughtlessly ill-mannered to expose them to what they see as pollution as breaking wind on a train or watching porn on your laptop.

It's tricky with my dog, who goes doolally on trains and wants to say hello to everyone. After seeing the horror he creates in some people, I've now learned it's often best to keep him on a very tight lead when going through areas where minarets are visible.

I live in Keswick and we are really dog friendly. The pet shop mentioned earlier is called Podgy Paws. You shouldn't have any bother finding a B&B - look up Rivendale as that defineatly allows dogs (I stayed there with my dog for 4 weeks when I got flooded). There are a lot of dog friendly pubs that do good food too.
