3 full days in Lake District

I am planning a trip at the end of the month up to the Lake District with my partner. It is our first time so we don't know much about the area but are keen to do lots of hiking and not too many touristy things. We are planning to take a tent and camp. Please could anyone recommend us some of the top hikes to do in the area? We will have 3 full days plus 2 half days (due to travel). Also if you could recommend any good campsites in convenient locations for the hikes, that would also be very useful. :-)

Thank you in advance!

I'd recommend having a look at the 'Go Lakes' website - packed with useful information.

If you don't want touristy, then the Western Lakes especially Wastwater might suit you. Ennerdale too.

Will you have a car?

There is also Youth Hostel nearby if you want something more than a tent.

Plenty of scenic hikes in the area.

You can walk to the summit of Scafell , England highest mountain, if you are reasonably fit and equipped.

Great Gable is close by

Completely off the beaten track, with hardly a tourist in site is the beautiful Ennerdale.

Well worth a visit.

What sort of level of hiking are you looking for? Are you fit, experienced fell walkers, who think nothing of a 15-mile hike with a few peaks along the way, or do you prefer gentle lakeside strolls? Or something in between?

But as for where you stay, you should definitely avoid the areas around Winderemere and Ambleside if you want to avoid the touristy bits. Good locations for hiking, in addition to leuca's good suggestions above, include Langdale, Glenridding, Buttermere, Braithwaite, or Coniston. I think there are campsites in or near most of those places, although someone else can probably give you better information than I could.

If you're planning on doing any high level walking a map and compass and the knowledge of how to use them are pretty much essential unless you have a GPS and even then map and compass are highly recommended as a backup. I've lost count of the number of times I've been stopped in the hills by people who have no idea where they are.

The Lake District Fells can look cosy and inviting but away from the valleys they can get wild and rough quite quickly.
