Public transportation from Manchester Airport

We arrive from US at Manchester 8:00 am and would like to take train or bus to the Lake District where we can rent a car for a few days stay. Return the car, and continue on to Dumfries by bus/train. What would be most convenient transport to a town in which we could rent a car? A town that has transportation on north. Thanks.

Get a train from Manchester Airport to the Lake District (Oxenholme or Windermere are served by trains) and then train from Lake District to Dumfries.

As above but a further suggestion would be Penrith

Its on the main London to Scotland rail line and you might find it easier to rent a car there than say Oxenholme or Windermere

Your car rental locations around the Lakes (with a handy train connection) are surprisingly limited. You may want to take the train to Carlisle (frequent trains from Man airport, either direct or change at Preston) and rent there. Avis Hertz and Europcar are all a short walk from Carlisle station. Direct trains from Carlisle for your onward journey to Dumfries.

I was going to say that I'm not sure what car rental is like in Windermere or Oxenholme, so Penrith and Carlisle suggested above are good calls. ;-)

OP doesn't say where in Lake District or when they plan on visiting, which would be helpful in giving better suggestions.

The Lake District is actually quite a large area (by UK standards) and some of the roads are very different to what the OP is probably expecting, unless they have driven there before. Same for Scotland.

I'd go for the train to Penrith and then either pick up a hire car there or bus from the station to Keswick and spend a few days there enjoying the lake and tootling around on the local buses then back to Penrith for the train to Dumfries with a change at Carlisle

You may want to consider holding on to your hire car for the journey toand stay in Dumfries.

The national car hire chains will often offer an option, at a cost, to pick up and drop the car at different places.

Penrith, Windermere and Keswick have local car hire companies just check there wont be a problem with US driving licences.

I just had the same issue for friends visitng the Lake District and we found that you can rent cars at Kendal, Penrith and Carlsle (all accessible by direct trains from Manchester Airport). Check www.nationalrail.co.uk for details and book in advance for the best prices and to guarantee that you get a seat.

If I were you, I would rent from Penrith, as it is an easy drive from the train station into the northern Lake District and an easy train ride north from Penrith to Dumfiries (via Carlisle).

Have fun!

One more vote for Penrith. Not only is it an easy drive from there to much of the northern parts of the Lake District, but the A66 from Penrith to Keswick is a stunningly beautiful road to drive along.

Wouldn't it be safer to wait until you've had a night's sleep. the thought of a sleep deprived, jet lagged person driving to the Lakes is rather alarming
