supermarket shopping in ambleside

we are spending a week self catering in ambleside. We are coming up from London by train and won't have a car at our disposal. are there large supermarkets - Tesco, Sainsbury or equivalent - in ambleside itself, or if not where is the nearest supermarket? Are there local inexpensive stores for milk bread etc? any other information we need? we are vegetarians as well.

If you are coming by train from London you will arrive at Windermere Station where you will have to take a bus to Ambleside. Right next to the station is a Booths Supermarket so you could stock up on your way to Ambleside.

As a suggestion why not do an order online from one of the large supermarkets and have it delivered to your accommodation.

Hello

Can just confirm what has already been said. There are NO large supermarkets in Ambleside just a Spar type store. Would suggest that you go to Booth in Windermere which is right next to the station then get a Taxi to Ambleside the Taxi Rank if right outside.

You can then use the Spar shop to buy bread and milk each day.

There's also a frequent bus from Windermere staion (a few steps from Booths) to Ambleside.

Note that Booths in Windermere has a lot of high quality stuff but is on the pricy side for stocking up for a week. For bulk buying there is an Asda on the South side of Kendal (turn right at the lights going into Kendal, go straight on at the roundabout and straight on at the lights). There is also a Morrisons off the A6 Shap Road on the north side of town. Another option is Sainsbury's in Lancaster. (come off at Jn 33 and follow the A6 and it's just past the town centre - get back on the motorway at Jn 34).

Sorry - didn't read that you were coming by train. Asda in Kendal is about 10 minutes walk from the station. Walk down the hill towards town - go straight on at the mini roundabout and near the traffic lights you will see a footpath going left which cuts through to Asda. If you've got time between trains at Lancaster, you could walk down to Sainsbury's - again about 10 minutes.
