Lovely break in gorgeous Keswick

Just got back from a lovely two day break in Keswick. We stayed at the beautiful reasonably priced The Beeches guesthouse which was so lovely and took in Grasmere Ambleside and Keswick. We were totally blown away by the scenery friendliness and homely feeling of Keswick. We visited a different part of the lakes last year and this place is a definate favourite. There are some timewarp eating places but these are villages and you just go with the flow. What a relaxing and lovely stay, thankyou Keswick.

Thanks for the feedback....we're planning two nights as part of our UK tour in October. We're looking at a B&B Portinscale - apparantly you can walk to Keswick - and we're wanting lake views and can't seem to find them in Keswick. Our choice appears to be between that and somewhere in Bowness which we have heard is more touristy (Ok - we're tourists but like to avoid the 'traps'). Would you agree? We're looking for a combination of cute villages; views; some walking (have a child so not extensive).

Portinscale is a lovely village to stay, lots of little walks on the doorstep and about 15 minute walk into Keswick

You definitely want to head for the Keswick area rather than Bowness if you want to avoid the tourist traps. Portinscale is very pleasant, and an easy walk to Keswick.

Places situated on "The Heads" would probably give you the best views of Derwentwater from Keswick but with the Lake foreshore itself and Crow Park no more than 5 mins walk from anywhere in Keswick I would concentrate on the B&B itself rather than a lake view.

Views of the fells are probably easier to come by and more spectacular (if its not raining).

If you do stay in Portinscale a walk round to the cafe at Nichol End Marine gives you spectacular views across the lake to Skiddaw.

I also hear from a local that the pub in Portinscale "The Farmer" is now serving good value pub grub, keep meaning to walk round there one evening

I can recommend "appletrees" which is on "The Heads" in keswick, front rooms on 1st and and 2nd floor give a lovely view of the lake and hope park.they have a website with picture gallery.

Portinscale is lovely but very quiet,(no shops a couple of hotels and one pub ) Keswick has loads to offer day and night without being touristy like Bowness.

Enjoy your visit wherever you decide
