Good tea rooms/cafes/anywhere that serves a nice cup of tea

Recommendations please for places that serve a good cup/pot of tea or coffee with home made cake or scones - in the northern lakes.

I can recommend the following:

Fellside Stores Hesket Newmarket - excellent scones and tea in the local shop.

Newlands Church - tea and cakes served every Sunday afternoon in the summer.

Are there any other gems that might otherwise be hard to find?

Not necessarily out of the way but the cafe at Dodd Wood on the eastern side of Bassenthwaite Lake is a good stop for tea and home made cakes and possibly even better cakes are found at the Whinlatter Visitor Centre - you even get hot water with your tea there!

Thanks for the suggestions - especially the mention of the hot water with teas at Whinlatter (topping up the pot is very important to my husband). He likes walks with a tea at the end, whereas I prefer tea with a short walk as an excuse.

The cafe at Nichol End Marine on Derwentwater ( through Portinscale) has an unrivalled view of Skiddaw etc across the lake if you sit outside.

Not a fancy place but good value and very large scones and brownies.

Oh and you get a pot of water with your pot of tea.

Hi there

In Keswick there is the Lakelandpedler - vegetarian cafe with lovely view of the car park! Don't let that put you off, cakes are good. If get out in Borrowdale then there is the Yew Tree Farm - Rosthwaite. Farm cafe (Flock-In think it is called) and in beautiful valley to go walking. Cafe specialises in lamb dishes straight from the land! Enjoy.

Hi

I can recommend the tearoom (there's a small shop there too) at The Watermill, Little Salkeld.

The cakes there were utterly delicious. I have a big weakness for Lemon Drizzle cake and this was perfect - just that right blend of sharpness and sweetness. My husband had treacle flapjack which he said was excellent too.

There's a cafe just by the river in Grange, in Borrowdale. Nothing particularly special about the tea (although certainly nothing wrong with it), but they do some lovely home-made cakes with it. Lovely location as well, especially if the weather is up to sitting outside.

I would recommend Ginger Pickles in the centre of Keswick (near the Lakeland shop) - lovely cuppa and home made cakes. Also if you get out to Lorton on the way to Buttermere try New House farm tea barn for the most delicious afternoon teas, savoury and traditional - you wont eat for the rest of the day!

Some great suggestions here! Thanks so much. We can now get our maps out and plan some walks that will end up at these tea places.
