Practical to stay in Nottingham for Lincoln visitors?

We are trying to book a room for mid June and are finding it very difficult to find availability...We will not have a car...ONe of us will need to be in Lincoln every day to visit archives there..Would it be practical to stay in Nottingham? Are there many trains to and from Nottingham each day? We do not know the area so would appreciate it if anyone can offer suggestions.

Lincoln is an OK city, but IMHO with only the Cathederal (which is great) and the Castle to 'see' then surprised you are having such a problem to get accommodation there.

You COULD stay in Nottingham, but it is a bit of a 'trek' from there to Lincoln even on the train.

A closer place might be Newark, which is a good small town with Castle, nice 'riverside', plenty of antique stores and a good market.

Thanks for your suggestion...I get the feeling there must be something going on in Lincoln. the week of June 13..maybe university graduation...almost every b and b and hotel I check is saying "not available."

There are many trains daily from Nottingham to Lincoln and vice versa. EssexWanderer's suggestion is a good one. Newark is a pretty small town and all the Nottingham trains pass through Newark on the way to Lincoln.

Trains from Nottingham take on average just over an hour and from Newark about 25 minutes.

Thanks very much...We actually ended up getting a room at the Poplars. so that's a relief...just easier to be in town for the archival research rather than having to come in each day. But I might also go to Nottingham just for a day to look around, so it's good to know it's only an hour...

Glad you found somewhere. I think a day out in Nottingham would give you a nice break from your research.

It's not the most beautiful of cities, but the Castle, Caves, Trip to Jerusalem pub, and a wander around the old Lace Market area are all worth doing. Also it has some good shopping. Enjoy!

Newark I have already mentioned and posted a website for. If you go there, a pint in the Saracen's head is good!

You will be fine in the Poplars and alot easier. The access to and from Nottingham isn't a bad service but an inconvience. Newark isn't really the best place to stop either.

Lincoln has some quality restaurants uphill, and some terrific history.
