Places to go outside of city

My daughter and I travel to Liverpool very regularly for shopping, it's a great city in so many ways. We are going over again in three weeks, this time we dragged the hubby along. He has been with us before and really enjoyed apart from the shopping. Anyway, as we will be there for five days I am wondering where we could go outside the city for a few hours, we have been to Chester and Manchester so would be open to new suggestions. We would prefer not to hire a car but it's also a possibility.

he is very easy going really, normally leaves the planning to me. He enjoys visiting stately homes and gardens or maybe a nice village for lunch. We have been to Speke Hall too.

Port Sunlight village and Lady Lever Art Gallery - train to Bebington and walk

West Kirby and walk to Hilbre island if the tide is right train to West Kirby

Southport walk along Lord Street and the pier

Another Place by Anthony Gormley ( men on the beach ) at Crosby train to Hall Road turn right out of station and keep going

Formby Woods for red squirrels rare now since squirrel pox - same train line as for Hall Road but go further and get off at Freshfield turn right and keep going

These last 3 could probably be done on one day

St Helens glass museum - train to St Helens

all above can be done on the All area pass from merseytravel that also includes the ferry which makes a pleasant trip - you could take that to Woodside and have a look at Birkenhead priory and also Hamilton Square in Birkenhead then continue on the ferry to Seacombe and back to Pier Head

Ness Gardens

Hope that gives some ideas

Get a sawaway ticket from mersey travel..You can travel on all busses and trains with an all area ticket..

This includes Chester and Southport..

A suggestion, if you have not already been...

Lark Lane, abot 3 miles outside the City centre

Penny Lane / Allerton Road

both great places to eat and drink

All great suggestions,if you haven't been to Chester Zoo you might want to try that,it's a beautiful place, not too far away from Chester in Ellesmere Port you have the Blue Planet Aquarium, the Cheshire Oaks & Coliseum Shopping & Dining Mall for some retail therapy & also in Ellesmere Port, the National Waterways Museum, you'll soon have so many suggestions it's going to be difficult to pick!

If you do decide on Chester Zoo, then there are cheap tickets available from Merseyrail stations which includes train fare(to Bache station) bus ticket to the zoo, just a couple of stops IIRC, and entrance fee.

There are several National Trust properties close to Liverpool (not including Speke Hall) in Lancashire and Cheshire

Rufford Old Hall

Dunham Massey

Little Moreton Hall

Quarry Bank Mill

Lyme Park

Tatton Park

They are all well worth visiting but you would need a car to get to them and some of them would take about an hour to get to.

There is also the U-Boat Story at Woodside ferry terminal which you can combine with a Mersey Ferry river cruise.
