Please advise on trains from Liverpool To York

On July 17, 1 adult, 1 15 yr old. Any discounts available for disabled people and/or children. Are the trains direct? How long does the journey take? Can they take the train at the airport?

Thanks for your help. MaLu

There are two trains an hour - one direct, one with a change. Roughly 2 hours. From Liverpool South Parkway - shuttle bus from the airport.

15 YOs travel at half fare

Disabled passengers require a railcard for discounted travel

Discounts are available for advance purchase - though slightly too early to book for your date

transpennine express are the rail company for the direct trains.

Please elaborate about the rail card... If we purchase in advance how we can prove disability to get the discount?

Thx, M

you need specific UK proofs of certain types of disability so it would not be available to foreigners.

The only card you'd be eligible for would be Family & Friends - but for a one off trip it's not likely to be cost effective.

As for travelling on British trains - just look on nationalrail.co.uk which will give the "logical" routes between places. Book around 12 weeks before date of travel when the cheap tickets become available (do some dummy bookings to get an idea of prices) through one of the websites linked to from nationalrail.co.uk. If one website fails then try another as all UK train companies sell each others tickets.

And that's about it. There are a few more quirks but for the majority of train travel in the UK that covers it.

From JLA to Liverpool South Parkway railway station you can get the AirLink501 (don't get on the 500 - it doesn't go to South Parkway) or the 80A, or 86A.

All buses are operated by Arriva and should cost £1.90 per adult and they are very frequent; plus they are all modern buses that are accessable by wheelchair.

For direct trains from Liverpool South Parkway to York use the following website:

Great info. Thanks. The family & friends card sounds like the perfect buy (there will more train traveling done by train/or bus). Can this card be bought in advance online or is it cheaper to buy it at the station? If that card is bought would my child pay 60% less on all fares, including bus fares? Do bus driver take cash? How does it work with the Family card? You show it and then pay the reduced price?

Thanks also for advice on how to get to the station from the John Lennon Airport.

As I've said it before, TA certainly rocks!

The Family & Friends Railcard is not valid on local buses in Liverpool.

I know nothing else about how that railcard works.

To answer your other question, the bus drivers will accept cash but make sure that if you pay with a note it is no bigger than a £10 note. If you try and use a £20 note it will probably not be accepted.

You can only buy a F&F Railcard online using an address in Britain, not with an international address. Alternatively, if you are visiting Britain you can buy a Family & Friends Railcard at a staffed station ticket office in England, Scotland, or Wales or a National Rail-licensed Travel Agent on arrival. You may want to complete the form in advance

familyandfriends-railcard.co.uk/clientfiles/…

The railcard has two named adults on it, one of whom must be travelling with a child aged 5-15. You have to show the Railcard when buying train tickets and when travelling.

You don't get discounts on buses, or on trains operating during the morning peak in the London/South-East area.

Thanks. Does that mean that the F&F can be used in Scotland as well to get the discounts?

Can I but tkx to York online and when end of July tkx on the Eurostar become available if you happen to know?
