Castles/Stately Homes near Liverpool

Will be spending 10 days in Liverpool in September. Would appreciate any advice on Castles and Stately Homes open to the public within driving distance of Liverpool. Many thanks.

Speke Hall is close to Liverpool. It is a large Tudor house. If by stately you mean large rooms with lots of gilt, then Speke Hall wouldn't qualify. But it is worth doing for Tudor period enthusiasts.

Conwy Castle although in Wales is only just over an hour by car via the A55 from Liverpool.Well worth the day trip as there is much more to see and do in Conwy and Llandidno after you have visited the castle

There is no public access to Knowsley Hall, Lord Derby's Estate.

Rufford Old Hall is drive able from Liverpool

www.nationaltrust.org.uk/rufford-old-hall/

Also about n hour by car towards Manchester along the M62/M6/M56 is Dunham Massey

You might like to join the National Trust if you are going to visit several NT properties as you may save on admission fees.

Cheshire is accessible by car from Liverpool

Thanks for that Helen, I stand corrected

I live nearby and wasn't aware that they are open for four or five days each year.

Thank you

Thanks to you all. Really appreciate it. Will check out joining National Trust. Visited Conwy Castle years ago when the children were small - am now an OAP so have probably forgotten what it looks like!! Looking forward to visiting Liverpool, eldest son has just moved and it will be our first time visiting him. Took children to Anfield also years ago as he has always been an avid Liverpool fan.

Lots of good NT properties within easy reach and why not consider Chester?castle is not open to the public but several days a week you can take tours that visit the Norman section of the castle, and/or enter towers in the Roman/medieval walls. There are tours of the Rows which are fascinating medieval townhouses. Some are now shops or bars that you can enter for free on your own

Sudley Hall, in Mossley Hill, part of Liverpool museums, is a lovely place to visit and can be reached by public transport from Liverpool City Centre
