You could go to Southport which is a 45 minute train ride up the coast. The countryside isn't stunning but it's a nice train ride to Southport which is an old Victorian seaside resort.

Chester is also a 45 minute ride away on the train. Again, it isn't a spectacular scenery and in this case train ride can be boring; but Chester is a lovely old walled city with Roman remains.

You can buy a All Area Saveaway ticket for £4.80 which will get you to and from both cities by train.

For more stunning countryside you would need to head further afield to perhaps North Wales, the Peak District or the Lake District.

Check www.nationalrail.co.uk for train schedules and fares.

All can be easily reached by train, but would obviously cost more and take longer to get to, meaning a longer day.

Thank you for your response. If we rented a car or took train, would you suggest North Wales or Pennines to spend the night and how long would it take to get to those places?

You could get a train from Liverpool to Conwy, with 1 change at Chester, in less than 2 hours. It's a scenic trip once you get out of Chester and go along the North Wales coast.

There's enough to keep you occupied for several hours in Conwy, such as the castle:

It can easily be done as a day trip.

To get to the Pennines it might actually be easier to hire a car. You could drive there in around about 2 hours depending on which route you took.

Another vote for Conwy,

great Castle and old town and you could also stay overnight in Llandudno which is a short bus or taxi ride away

You can also get main line trains to Llandudno Junction

Trains

www.nationalrail.co.uk

Wider range of restaurants and accommodations in Llandudno than Conwy but easy to do both in a day or two

Llandudno s a Victorian seaside town with a lovely pier with great views of Snowdonia

If arriving by train there are bus tours around Llandudno and the Great Orme
