The Lisbon food was lovely in there, but there are loads of bars around there pretty reasonable

There's too many to mention.

Usual Wetherspoons, Lloyds Bars etc dotted about, and the William Gladstone (mentioned above) at top of Mathew Street on North John Street. There's a Slug and Lettuce on the other side of the road.

But if it's normal pub grub you are after and not a restaurant (loads of them about catering for all tastes) then head to Thomas Rigbys pub on Dale Street. Decent ales and food there.

Further down Dale Street is another great real pub that does pub grub called the Vernon Arms:

400 metres further down Dale Street and you get to the Excelsior. Good beer and food sold here. I think they still serve Pie Minister Pies:

But the best pub in this part of town for food and ale is the Ship & Mitre. 12+ real ales and ciders, and dozens of foreign beers and lagers. They cook the food in front of you - no frozen food here like you get in most other pubs!

Well worth the 5 minute walk down the road away from the Wetherspoons etc around Mathew Street.

But if it's just a microwaved curry you want then go to the "world famous" Grapes pub on Mathew Street, where the Beatles used to drink shandy! :-/

Forgot about that one, and I go drinking there all the time! ;-p

Might be a good idea to book a table - or cell - at Liverpool One Bridewell. It tends to get busy in the evening and especially at weekends.

Another pub/bar to consider is the Shipping Forecast on Slater Street. It's only a 10 minute walk from the Mathew Street area and they serve food. Drinks can be on the pricey side which keeps out the riff-raff! ;-p

It tends to attract a younger "arty" crowd, but in recent months I've seen "older" (is that the right word!?) people frequenting the place.

As well as the suggestions already made would be the Hanover (on Hanover Street) and Pogue Mahone's on Seel Street. I would also consider Dr Duncan's - the food used to be good here and very good value but I am not sure what the situation is as it did close down for a couple of weeks recently following the closure of Cain's Brewery.
