We really enjoyed the fish and chips at Geale's right near the Notting Hill Station. Its a little hard to find, on a hidden square, so call them.

This might help you find Geales: http://www.london-eating.co.uk/maps/486.asp

Around the corner on Highgate is another good Fish and Chip place called Costa's. Seashell in Marylebone (behind the railway station) is also very good.

If you use the search function above you will find quite a few discussions of the issue as it is a popular topic--you'll find lots of opinions there, in any case!

The North Sea resto, Golden Fish Bar (eat in or take away, the latter at ridiculously low prices), the Fryers Delight, the Golden Hind - all worth a visit.

If you're in the mood to travel a bit further from the centre, and want a bit of a day out, head to Muswell Hill, for a lunch at Toff's. Take the Piccadilly line to Finsbury Park, then the W7 bus to Muswell Hill Broadway. It's a nice ride through a part of London few visitors see, and Toff's do fry up a nice bit of fish.

You can walk off the excess by strolling around Alexandra Palace.

With thousands of places serving them is any one place going to be the best?

Well, some are better than others. And some are truly awful. Never hurts to ask.

I second the Seashell on Lisson Grove (sit down restaurant or take away on the corner).

Geales is the best in London but not a patch on Northern fish and chips. For the best fish and chips in the world try the Magpie Cafe in Whitby, North Yorkshire. You have to queue for half an hour to get in but its worth it. Whitby is also a really pretty fishing village and the Uk home of Dracula.

Had Fish & Chips in a small restaurant with a painted mural on the wall. Not at all fancy and the take out window was popular with the cabbies. Icould this have been Seashell?
