Generally is Uber safer or the local cabs?
Also, can anyone suggest a good taxi company for airport transfer please. Thanks.
I think Uber has its place (though there are many who would prefer that Uber was nowhere near the streets of London), but for a short journey in central London I would choose a black cab over Uber as the driver will genuinely know the roads. For an airport transfer, pre-book a car service.
Bear in mind that public transport in London is excellent, and there are very few journeys where any sort of car transport is essential.
For getting around London Uber are OK but there is extensive, good public transport and you can hail black cabs on the street and they can use bus lanes (not to be underestimated) so Uber's pretty pointless. Personally I would only bother with Uber for suburban trips (and maybe not even then if I can use a reliable minicab co. known to me).
Uber is great for some journeys
but with other posters here, for an airport pick up I'd prefer to use a pre booked car.
Not sure what you mean by 'safer', but neither are fundamentally unsafe in any serious respect. I generally use Addison Lee cars within London - a large firm which is quick, reliable, and cheaper than a black cab. I prefer Blackberry Cars for airport transfers purely for their lower pricing. I have been let down by Uber a few times so I would now only use them if Addison Lee can't come straight away.

Once in London, if not using public transport (download the citymapper app to help you plan routes), then I would just stop a black cab on the street.
Just told a colleague about citymapper and he has been to London many times and always manages to get lost. Hopefully the next time that app will help him.
Not available on all platforms (no pun intended) but if your operating system supports it well worth installing.
