best London day trip/walk in the country

My wife and I will be visiting London this March 29-April 6. We will take a day to hike in the country. Ideally the hike would be less than 10 miles, traverse beautiful country, include at least one pub/restaurant stop in a quaint small town and historical landmarks/sites.Too much to expect? Does this hike exist?

Not too much to expect at all. How about the South Downs? Have a look at www.visitsouthdowns.com and see what you think. Another alternate might be a walk in the Chilterns - check out www.chilternsaonb.org - the site has links for walks starting from rail stations, and walks of short, medium and long duration.

Time for me to go to bed, get better glasses or both. I thought your post said ideally the hike would be less than minutes! Seemed silly to travel anywhere in order to stop for a pint & take a 10 minute walk. And I couldn't , for the life of me, figure out how you were going to fit in the historical landmark.

Luckily, TravellerPlus has given you some good ideas.

Enjoy your trip :)

This site you can search a walk to suit your mood. You are going to the land of ramblers, walkers and hikers, where "let's go for a stroll" actually means a five mile hike.....(my husband will testify to that much to his chagrin). A pub stop is mandatory (or medicinal in some cases).

There are some lovely walks along the Surrey North Downs, around Dorking, which isn't very far from London but very much in the country . There is a website surreyhills.org that gives details of routes and a weekend bus service especially for reaching parts of these walks. There are some nice pubs on these routes, as we have experienced. Also take a look at Polesden Lacey, a National Trust house in the area - there are great, scenic walks along from there and the house is lovely (with tea room rather than pub!)
