London Gatwick to Old Street

Hi all,

My wife and 2 children (ages 10 & 15)and I are arriving in Gatwick on Sept 29th for 4 nights in London. We are travelling to Old Street so the best way at the moment appears to be via Gatwick Express to Victoria and then tube to Old St via Kings Cross. We can get an anytime GEX return ticket for the family for £78. This is a good price for the GEX. Are there any other ways for us to get from Gatwick to the city for a similiar/lesser amount? NOTE: EasyBus not really an option - takes an hour longer and is currently almost as expensive the GEX deal!

Thanks in advance for your help,

Kieran

What time do you arrive on the 29th?

Victoria is out of your way for Old Street and the GEX more expensive.

Instead depending on your answer for your arrival time you can take the Thameslink Trains to London Bridge and change for the northern underground line for the 3 stops to Old Street.

If you let us know where you are staying others will advise you on which exit to use at Old Street.

GEX is normally considered more expensive than the Southern Rail system which runs on the same track.

Have you tried www.nationalrail.co.uk?

It will give you options and times.

Good choice re Easybus..poor reports on here.

Traindefinitely the quickest option

Elmer's End is right about the Thameslink to London Bridge, followed by the Northern line to Old Street, although Southern trains also run between Gatwick and London Bridge for a similar price.

Victoria railway station is the wrong side of London.

Make sure that you catch a train marked London Bridge or to Bedford that gives London Bridge as one of the stops.

Trains to Bedford are not stopping at London Bridge due to the building works until 2018 - shouldn't affect you on your journey.

Southern trains do run from Gatwick but many take a longer journey time as they shop more times or you may have to change trains at East Croydon.

Thanks everyone. We land at 11am and are staying at the Premier Inn Old Street. The main reason we were considering GEX was the excellent deal - £78 anytime return for 4 people. Will look at the other options suggested. Thanks again

Found this anytime return on the Thameslink website for £59. Looks just what we need. Or am I missing something? Thanks in advance.

There shold be an option there for

Std Anytime Day Single with Child Flat Fare Single £22.55 so £45.10 for 2 single tickets. Don't you see that option?

Stayed in that PI last time in London. Great vibrant area. If you like fish & chips and with a screen name like RickSteinPadtow I guess you do) or just any kind of fish this place (pardon the pun) is superb http://www.fishcentral.co.uk/ Huge portions though so don't over order. Lovely family run restaurant which has been there for nearly 50 years. It is not on a main street so unless you know about it you would never pass by. You should make reservations.

Also loved Ceviche on the corner opposite. Peruvian food kinda tapas like. Was delicious.

Someone will correct me if I am wrong but the 76 bus takes a great route past St Pauls, the Old Bailey, over Waterloo Bridge and then up to the London Eye so great sightseeing for very little money.

The £59 fare I found was an anytime return fare for the 4 of us (2 adults and 2 kids)
