travelling from london to burton upon trent

Hello all, we'll be in london the last week of september and then travelling up to burton on trent to go narrowboating. My questions is best way to get from London up there, and any suggestions about place to stop and visit along the way.

We could train up and stop somewhere or take a slightly less then direct route, or we could rent a car and drop it off..

thanks for any ideas

By train you can go from Paddington station via Birmingham or from St Pancras via Derby. Paddington probably has more hotels nearby for your London stay, it is also the source of the Heathrow express.
