need to buy a digital camera in london

My daughter is on a study abroad trip starting out in London. Another student dropped my daughter's new digital camera and the lens broke. She needs to find a new digital camera (she can afford) for the rest of her trip. Any advice on where to shop for a good deal in London....she is in Kensington right now and leaves for Paris on Sunday. The cost of mailing ours is prohibitive....anyway express global fedex or dhl is and not sure we want to trust sending a camera to a hotel....plus the fact she is only in one city for a couple of days at a time.

Jessops, http://www.jessops.com/, is the dominant camera retailer in the UK. You may want to go to their website to see the kind of prices you may have to pay.

If you are just looking for a basic 6.3 mp, 3X optical zoom and 2.5" screen camera, one of the larger Boots drug store is worth checking out. When I left my camera on a train in Wales last October, I ended up buying a Samsung with those sort of specs at Boots, where the 50% off sale meant I was paying very little more than I would have paid in Canada.

Also tell your daughter that if she is putting an existing memory card into a new camera she will need to reformat it, and loose any photos already taken. The best thing is to buy another memory card as well just for the new camera.

As other poster said Boots is very good - there is a big branch of Boots next to Kensington High Street station., otherwise if she can get into Oxford Street there is a branch of Currys Digital almost at Marble Arch end - just near Primark (cheap clothes)

IMO the best bet for electronics would be Tottenham Court Rd. I agree with previous posters re Jessops and Boots.

I've always found that John Lewis comes out quite well - and they have a "clearance event" from the end of next week.

Failing that have a look at the on-line offers on www.hotukdeals.com

Jessops have just announced they are closing 80 shops - the curse of the internet.

John Lewis is unbeatable, but Boots are more easy to find.

Sorry to hear about the camera. Travel insurance might cover the cost of a nice replacement, but I guess she wants a new one *now*.

Try Morgan Computers on New Oxford Street

Long-established, reputable, (unlike many of the traders on TCR). May have some manufacturer's refurb or end-of-line deals. They've got a little 4MP Olympus for about £30.

I've bought a laser printer from them (lasted 11 years), a PC (lasted about 6 years) and some smaller stuff.

Go to the website of Argos:

then click on digital cameras on the left of the page; then click on "sort by lowest price". If there's anything there that you like, your daughter will be able to buy it from one of their branches, and they are all over London.

If you want more specialised camera shops, then the above suggestions are all very good. Also Camera World on Wells Street near Oxford Street, and York Cameras near Bury Place.
