Oyster-I am just dumb-pls help

I am so confused- I have read the other posts but still can't figure it out

Pleae give me your best advice

Situation: myself and 13 year old daughter

5 days in London

coming in through LHR to Kings Cross (where we are staying)

leaving Eurostar very early day 6

plan to take tube in to Kings Cross from LHR

plan to get 2 day Hop on/Hop Off bus

1. sometimes we will want to use tube or bus before 9:30 am- does the restriction only apply to tube or bus as well

2. do i get an Oyster card for both of us, or just self- how does it work for daughter (does she have to line up for ticket?)

3. should I get a 3 day Travelcard and start to use it on day 3, using Hop on Hop off bus for other 2 days

4. should I just get a 7 day Travelcard and eat the other 1 or 2 days (not really sure how we would get to Hop On Hop off bus from Kings Cross if we do not use bus/tube)

5. do i need a passport photo for the Oyster card

6. exactly how much do I put on the Oyster card if that is what I get to come in from heathrow.

7. where can I get the 3 pounds back and any extra on Oyster card in the city (do not want to have to worry about doing this at Waterloo, where I assume I cld do so, since train leaves at 6:30 am!!!)

8. should I put a 7 day travelcard on or just money- we will walk quite a bit, but assume 2 or 3 buses / day and a tube ride or 2

impornat factors: 1. cost

2. but ease of use too

Total cost for the 2 of us if I get a 7 day Travelcard. or should i just put some money

Please help me if you can

Note to self - Never try to answer questions about Oyster just as one is heading to bed :-)

For you I would suggest a 7 day zones 1&2 Travelcard costing £23.20. No deposit is required and no photo. You can then add some Pay As You Go (staff at the ticket kiosk will advise) to cover your journey in from Heathrow. For daughter you could either buy the same for £11.60 (technically a photocard is needed but if she looks young then the staff at Heathrow may not be too bothered about this) OR she can buy a daily travelcard. This will cost just £1 if you travel off peak (before 9.30am) or £3.30 in zones 1&2 if you need to travel before that time but she will have to stand in line or use the ticket machines every day.

I think that is it but if things are still unclear then do ask again.

"This will cost just £1 if you travel off peak (before 9.30am) or £3.30 in zones 1&2"

I think Adam means after 9.30 am, not before.

Photos!!! This is the first I've ever heard of needing photos!!! Under what scenario would you need a photo?

Warmwinds, this is from TFL's website "You do not need a photocard to buy or use any adult-rate Travelcard or Bus Pass on Oyster."

I would get the seven day Travelcard, rather than try to go through a Gordian knot of machinations over three day cards plus or minus concern about travelling on other days - makes my head spin thinking about it!

No photos are required any more unless you want an annual season ticket.

If you leave LHR after 0930 on the day you arrive, you'll need to put a pound of PAYG money on the Oyster card with your Travelcard, to cover the excess fare from zone 6 to zone 2.

Since you're goingn to buy a Travelcard, not Oyster for PAYG, there won't be a deposit charged for the card.

A child needs a photocard to travel at reduced rate on Oyster.

As it costs £5 (I think) and takes a week to get it is impractical for most tourists.

However, a child accompanying an adult who is a travelcard holder pays £1 a day for an off peak travelcard and doesn't need a photocard.

Children travel free on buses anyway.

Your best bet is the £1 a day I think.
