Great Place To Sit Down and Read A Book

Morning All

I will be in London for a conference next week, and have a spare day on Wednesday. I've posted already to get advice about museums, I would just like to ask : -

Would you recommend any places that are great for a lone traveller to sit down and read a book? If its a place that serves drinks, it could be coffee, or alcoholic, just a relaxing place with a nice atmosphere.

Thanks all

Daniel

Anywhere in the Great Court of the British Museum. It can be a bit noisy but it's light and airy and there's a café. If you have a drink and sandwiches with you there's plenty of wall to sit on in front of the British Museum.

Russell Square has a café and it has plenty of grass to sit on as well as benches.

I'm sure other people have favourite spots.

How about the 5th view lounge and cafe at the top of Waterstone's Piccadilly, the largest bookstore in Europe.

The piazza of the British Library at St Pancras if the weather's fine. Sit and sip a glass of chilled white wine or a cup of coffee and enjoy your read. Dozens of other people will be too. Or if it's too chilly for outdoors then go inside to the cafe on the mezzanine level.

Find a corner in The French House in Soho early in the afternoon. Or grab a riverside table at the Film Cafe at BFI on the Southbank.

Somerset House. In nice weather, I love to sit with a book in either the courtyard, watching the fountains, or the river terrace, overlooking the Thames. There are cafes on site, where you can buy coffee, other drinks, lunch and snacks, but you can also bring your own.

Also the small park/gardens beside Embankment tube station. You can buy a cup of coffee/tea in one of the shops in the vicinity of the station, and - provided it's a nice day - sit on one of the benches on the gardens and enjoy your book (or stretch out on the grass ; which sounds like an invitation to smoke pot, but it's not).

I agree with Insightful about Embankment Gardens, which also has free jazz concerts at lunchtimes, but if that's distracting then you can move to another part of the garden.

Across the river to the Royal Festival Hall to sit either inside or outside and watch the river flow by.

Any London park.

Along the South Bank - esp between Embankment/Hungerford Bridge and London Bridge. Lots of cafes if you need refreshment and benches. Although if you're anything like me you'll end up people watching and doing very little reading....
