It is not nearly as bad as it was 30 years ago, sometimes a problem with untrained staff in shops and bars ,but I have never experienced any major problems.

A Polish friend of mine delibrately takes Scottish notes when he travels down south just to try and provoke a reaction and then pretends he doesn't speak English, even though he speaks perfect English with a slight Scottish accent.Even he has had few problems changing them in London.

There's a recent long thread on the Edinburgh forum which partly discusses this issue - includes a very good summary of the legal situation by basementbob. Personally, I've had problems with Scottish notes in small shops down here but have always had them accepted eventually - after explaining that they really are money...

Spending Scottish notes in London is not as bad as it is elsewhere in England. Taxis, transport, major shops and restaurants will generally take them without batting an eyelid.

I also like to try to spend Scottish money just for a row! However, Scottish notes are not legal tender so they are perfectly within their rights to refuse the notes but it's just churlish as the English banks will accept them without problems

I once had an issue trying to use Scottish money at a small shop in London. The clerk didn't want to take it - till I told him that was all I had. Rather than lose the sale, he took it.

I've never had problem, but did respond to a quizzical glance once - in a very rural area. I just smiled and said I lived in Scotland.Even if I don't have a scottish accent, I've got a very honest face;-)

Can't recall ever having Scottish money, but I once wound-up w/£30 in Irish currency (must have received it as change from something.) I had to pay a B&B/hotel and asked the owner/manager if he'd accept it. He looked at it, said "What's this then? I've never seen Irish money." And graciously took it.

Just back in London from Scotland with a group. One of them tried to spend a Scottish note in Covent Garden and the stallholder refused to accept it so lost out on a sale.

Has anyone seen a Scottish one pound note recently and, if so, how common are they?
