There are scores of mainly expensive and mainly very nice hotels in both areas but to help you we would really need to know your actual budget, your needs (twin, triple, family room etc?) and likes (modern and hip or old fashioned and formal?).
Thank you for the posts. It's just my wife and I and hope to take in the sites and a show. These areas are pricy but we are willing to spend around 200-250 per nite. Obviously less is best.
Is that £200 - £250, or $200 - $250?
Dear the artgirl,
it would be pounds.
If it's just the two of you then you could consider bidding for a 5 star hotel on Priceline. You should certainly get somewhere very nice for less than that amount but do be aware of the pitfalls such as you pay for the room before you know the name of the hotel and you get no money back should you have to cancel for any reason. Websites such as biddingfortravel are very useful in this regard.
Otherwise have a look at The Cavendish as suggested above, The Chesterfield Mayfair, The Millennium Mayfair, The Charing Cross and use websites such as hoteldoorman. They currently have doubles or twins at £174 per night including breakfast and tax throughout August at the Hilton Waldorf, a good hotel in a superb location near Covent Garden.
