From Heathrow to London -> London to Stansted

I am looking at transportation possibilities for 4 adults from November 29th to December 2nd. We are flying into the Heathrow Airport, and flying out of Stansted a few days later. I was wondering what is the best way to get around while in london? We don't really want to hassle with renting a car and parking. I know there is a Heathrow Express Train and a Stansted Express Train. Is this the easiest/cheapest way to get to and from London? Then just use the Tube while in London? Is there any way to get discount passes in advance? Thanks!

At what time does your flight from STN depart? Some of the low cost carriers are very strict with check in times and if you do not check in during that period, you'll not be allowed to fly without buying another ticket.

If you're looking at an early departure from STN, you may have to take the Terravision coach from Victoria (Green Line Coach Station) or Liverpool Street station to get to the airport in good time.

There are a number of options to get from Heathrow to central London. Depending on where you're staying in the city, the Underground can get you from LHR to the centre in 35 - 55 minutes and will cost £3.50 - 4 (possibly less).

Travelcards allow unlimited use of the Tube, DLR and National Rail services in the paid for zones, plus bus use in all zones. A one day Travelcard for zones 1 and 2 can cost just £5.30; an off peak Travelcard that includes the journey from Heathrow costs just £7. You need not buy Travelcards in advance, as they are sold at all three Underground stations at LHR.

The HEX is a rather pricey option; Heathrow Connect trains cost less but take a bit longer to travel to Paddington. If you've not booked a hotel near Paddington then taking HEX or Connect might be counterproductive, as you'd have to get from that train station to your hotel.

So. At what time do you arrive at LHR; at what time does your flight depart from STN? At what hotel have you booked in central London; are you amenable to using the Tube from Heathrow? Knowing that can help give more precise answers.

Your arrival time means that the Tube option would be quite practical, depending on where you will be staying. The tube train will get busy, though not completely packed, as it gets towards central London but most of the Saturday shoppers will already be there. Similarly for your departure, the trains will not be crowded and the coaches, which are cheaper, should not get exceptionally snarled up in rush hour traffic.

Yes- 1st reply above is sound; forget the Heathrow express (expensive, with marginal time saving), buy travelcards on arrival at Heathrow tube on your first day (so you can use them throughout the evening) and decide on your route to Stansted according to whether you are staying in the West End/west London (in which case, Victoria bus = best)or City/ East London ( Liverpool Street train better). Or get your hosts to check out the price of a mini-cab (a licenced cab which is cheaper than a black taxi), as at £50-80 from London this may be cheaper and easier for 4 people than 4 fares on train or bus

Arriving at LHR at 1400 means you should be through passport control and have your bags by 1500 unless something very untoward happens.

You might want to buy one day Travelcards at LHR on arrival; for just £7 each (for travel in zones 1 - 6, with LHR in zone 6) you'll get the journey from airport into town, and any other bus, Tube or DLR journeys that day you might wish to take.

One day cards for zones 1 and 2 will cost just £5.30 on Sunday and the same on Monday unless you start your travels before 0930, in which case the cards will cost £6.80.

Your departure from STN is at a fairly civilised hour, so the Terravision coach from Victoria (Green Line station) or Liverpool Street station might suit, at £8 per person. The Stansted Express is a more expensive option, departing from Liverpool Street station. http://www.terravision.eu/london.html
