Vegetarian restaurants in central London

Hi there,

Will be travelling with my son and daughter (both in their twenties) in May and can't wait!

My daughter is vegetarian and it would be nice to have some recommendations with a bit of variety on offer (i.e. not all vegetarian or restaurants simply offering limited choices).

Asian, Indian, Italian in any of the following areas: South Ken., Hyde Park, London Eye, National Gallery. Also are there any pubs offering vegetarian menus?

Thanks for any suggestions on the above!

Carnevale on Whitecross Street in the City (EC2) can be very good. All food is vegetarian, some vegan as well. Very pleasant, small and rather romantic. It is open for lunch and dinner all weekdays and on Saturday evening. It is near the Barbican and, therefore, the Museum of London.

A 10 minute walk from the National Gallery is Food for Thought on Neal Street near Covent Garden. Standing in front of Covent Garden tube station, turn left, cross the road to Marks and Spencers and Neal Street is the little road next to Marks and Spencers. The restaurant is about 2/3 of the way down the full length of the road on the left hand side. It's a small basement restaurant (cosy, but not ideal for the claustrophobic), and you sometimes have to share a table.

Another nice one is Mildreds in Soho. Sometimes it's worth booking as it can be very popular:

I like Eat and Two Veg on Marylebone High Street. This is not particularly close to the places you listed, but is not hard to get to. It's a bit like a diner:

London caters very well for vegetarians. Almost every restaurant will have more than one vegetarian option, so I don't think you will have a problem. Again, almost all pubs have at least one vegetarian option.

Hi,

thanks very much for both those replies. It is already after 11 pm - where did the time fly!

Will check out the link tomorrow morning and good to know the restaurant is near London Museum.

Time to end off for today.

Regards

PS

I hadn't realised that more replies had come in! Thank you so much to all the others as well. Will be printing out replies to put in my London folder. Lots of useful things to do and now places to eat as well.

Interesting about the pubs. Here the choice of vegetarian dishes (at least at the places we've been to) is usually pretty limited. When we get back I'll probably have to check it out here!

Today I got a package with maps and the official guidebook from VisitBritain ...

Thanks again!

I think you'll have plenty of choice without having to seek out vegetarian restaurants. I don't eat unsourced meat - so usually go vegetarian when I'm out. And I rarely feel restricted.

For example, if you look at the menu for Giraffe which is near the London Eye on the South Bank at www.giraffe.net you'll see what I mean.

Tibits = just opened on Geddon St

Mildreds = classic

Blah Blah Blah in Shephards Bush -

Mildred's - Soho

Vanilla Black - Chancery Lane

Neal's Yard Salad Bar, which serves Brazilian-inspired vegetarian and vegan food.

You will find most Indian and Italian cuisine have v good options for vegetarians even if they are not totally veggie. London is veggie friendly so you will have no problem.

For Vegetarian Indian Restuarants which serve south Indian food which specialise in Dosas / Idlis

Woodlands restaurants

http://www.woodlandsrestaurant.co.uk/

They have branches in Piccadilly, Marylebone

Diwana, Ravi Shanker, Chutney's all on Drummond street near Euston station are budget priced vegetarian restuarants. Buffets are good value if on tight budget.
