Interesting place to stay between Heathrow and Bath?

I will have a free day after landing at Heathrow before meeting someone in Bath. Any suggestions for someplace to stop over on the way to Bath? I don't want to stay in London. I'll be using public transport, bus and train, which is better?. Also, what is the best way to get from Wells to Totnes using bus or train? Thanks.

Places to consider between Heathrow and Bath: Salisbury, Cirencester, Winchester.

Wells to Totnes isn't particularly straightforward. Your easiest way is probably to get a bus to Bristol, and then a train from Bristol Temple Meads railway station to Totnes.

You might be able to do something with a bus to Castel Cary and train from there.

Its not far enough you need to break the journey and there isnt anywhere actually on the way you could realistically stop by using PT.

Oxford might be possible (Its not on the way as such) , there is a direct coach from Heathrow. It would involve a change of trains to get to Bath from Oxford.

Or you could just get the direct coach to Bath from Heathrow, avoid the timewasting of changing hotels, have an extra day there or take a day trip from Bath on an organised tour if you didnt want to spend the extra time in Bath.

If you wanted to go to Wells, take bus 173 from Bath Bus Station - it runs every hour at 5 minutes past the hour and takes about 75 minutes.

You'd have to go from Heathrow to London Waterloo station but then you could take a train to Salisbury, lots of historic stuff to see and also has a cathedral. You can then take a train from Salisbury to Bath.

Best way from Heathrow to Salisbury is the RailAir coach to Woking, and to take the train from there.

To me the obvious place is Salisbury for the Cathedral, Old Sarum and Stonehenge.

As well as the RailAir Bus to Woking for the frequent Salisbury Trains there are also 2 or 3 direct National Express coaches to Salisbury if you are lucky.

Other places that might appeal are Winchester or Portsmouth both with direct National Express buses from Heathrow and rail to Bath.

If you choose Salisbury the least hassle way is probably to go to Bath, stay there, and then day trip from it so you aren't encumbered with luggage and don't waste part of your day checking out and backtracking.

Thank you all, great suggestions! How long do you think it will take to clear customs and get to the train station at Heathrow, I want to buy my ticket online and must choose a train departure time. Do all the trains go back in to London or are there any that go from Heathrow to Bath? Thanks

It depends on which terminal you are arriving at and also the time of day but as a rule of thumb allow an hour from touchdown to the arrivals hall and then ten minutes to walk to the tube station or the railway station or the coach station although those at T4 and T5 are closer.

From Heathrow to Bath it could be quicker to catch the Railair bus to Reading and then a train from there but it depends on timings. You cannot collect train tickets at Heathrow so it might be better to take the Heathrow Express or the cheaper Heathrow Connect to Paddington and buy a ticket when you arrive and then get a ticket in advance online just for the Paddington to Bath train. If you are heading for Salisbury from Heathrow then there are no savings to be made by buying tickets in advance

There is a coach that goes direct to Bath. Check the national express website http://www.nationalexpress.com/home.aspx for times and cost.

Total journey time overall wont be much different to train, and you wont have the issue of selecting a particular timed train you might miss and invalidate the ticket.
