Things to do on a Sunday morning?

We are heading to The Cavendish on Saturday morning and are wondering what to do on the Sunday after breakfast? Its slightly annoying shops open so late and we are early risers and never know how to fill our morning before our train at 2.30pm!!!!

If the weather is nice why not go for a walk in either St James' Park or Green Park before heading on to the shops?

It's the last day of the Kuniyoshi at the Royal Academy: http://www.royalacademy.org.uk/ I thought this was a great exhibition.

It's very close to your hotel and open from 1030.

Be in The Mall at about 10.30 am and see the Mounted Guard ride down the Mall to Horseguards and there change the Guard. The relieved Guard then rides back along the Mall to Knightsbridge Barracks. The troopers in their breastplates, plumed helmets, high cavalry boots, with drawn sabres mounted on beautifully groomed horses on a quiet Sunday morning make quite a sight.

What is this Mounted Guard actually guarding? They are guarding the Palace of Whitehall against attack from across the open country. The Palace of Whitehall no longer exists, apart from the wine cellar in the depths of the Ministry of Defence. To make it more perplexing the open country over which an attack might be expected is blocked by Buckingham Palace. Unfortunately the original order authorising the guarding of the Palace of Whitehall has never been recinded. On such idiosyncrasies are many of our ancient traditions based.

You could get down to the river for a walk along the Thames, if the weather is nice it is great on a Sunday morning. Great sites, less crowds and for me it is one of the best bits of living in London and all free.

Enjoy !!

Assume you will be getting your train from Euston, St Pancras or KingsX, so you could visit the British Library just alongside the rail stations.

The BL does (or did last time I was there) have a very good luggage lockup for use by researchers which is open to the public. Almost to good to be true so double check before you rely upon this facility.

As the BL is so close to StP/KX/Euston, you could drop off your goods & then head for the British Museum, Wellcome Foundation & the British Library itself to soak up some national treasures.

Bricklane Market, then Sunday "Up" Market (nearby), and SpitalField's (nearby too).

Should keep you distracted for 3 hours at least.

You could head over to Covent Garden; the arts and crafts markets open at 9 am. Then, stroll to Somerset House and visit the Courtald Gallery. What a beautiful collection of Impressionists! and it's small enough to get done in a couple of hours.
