The Milestone or The Ritz?????

I will be staying in London with my husband for my 50th birthday. I have always wanted to stay at the Ritz because I had always thought it was supposed to be such a fine hotel - but I have been reading reviews that lead me to be questioning whether it will be the right choice as some say it is run down and snooty. On the other hand, I have read that not only has the Milestone won T &L's best in the world for service, but also Conde Nast's best in Britain award. However, I believe the rooms are quite small... So - I am torn... The prices are equal.

Where should we stay?

Rooms are small compared to North America everywhere in London- be prepared.

I have not stayed at the Ritz but I love the Milestone- it is posh without being stuffy, and the staff are fabulous (especially concierge Terry). Very quintessentially English. We stayed in their second lowest grade of double room, and it was spacious enough. Beautiful decor & champagne on arrival! So it might be worth the upgrade if space is important to you. If you go have a drink in their conservatory bar- it's decked out in monchrome with iconic photos, and there's a pretty outside area too (it was winter so we didn't sit there!) The restaurant is decent but there is better for the money elsewhere in London IMO. Good breakfast.

I would definitely stay there again.

Bizarrely the milestone has about 12 different room categories. I have not stayed there but I hear it is excellent. Do you or your husband like a hand of cards? I ask because if you do the Ritz has a fantastically plush underground casino and bar (with a strict entrance policy of hotel guests and members only)

The Milestone has a lovely drawing room where you can have afternoon tea. Very English. Reminds me of a drawing room in a country estate.

The Ritz holds Dinner Dances on Fridays that I think you can get a special booking for if you are staying there. Perhaps this would be a 'romantic' evening for your birthday??

I have never been I must admit, but found out about this a year or 2 ago, as the result of another TALF question.

If you use the Search bar for Ritz Dancing, or the like, you might get the low down from those who HAVE been.

Which simply looks better to you? I haven't stayed at either, but would pick The Milestone in a minute. Just love the traditional look. The Ritz as you say is a fine hotel, but it looks like any ornate grand hotel you'd find in Paris, and you're not in Paris.

I stayed at the Ritz about 2 years ago. We had a suite and our room was very large. You are right, the hotel is snobby. My travel agent tried to go in and they wouldn't let him in. The next year we stayed at the Connaught. We liked it much better and the service was great. We wouldn't stay at the Ritz again, but we did go back for tea as the room is quite nice. Check out the Connaught as it has just been refitted and should be all new.

I haven't stayed at The Ritz, so can only say that the location and afternoon teas are superb.

I've stayed at The Milestone, loved the room, and think that the service is marvellous. Although I love and used to work in the area, I have to admit it isn't as central as The Ritz. But this is a special occasion, and I think you'll want the entire experience to be memorable - the Milesone's service will ensure that your memories of the entire trip will indeed be great (though for me, my experience at the hotel is a big part of a trip, so I may put more emphasis on a hotel than others). And as Kay says, it will be like coming back to a beautiful country home each time you return to the hotel from a day of sightseeing.

It's worth mentioning it's a special birthday if you decide to book, btw.
