I wouldn't want to try to make a connection between LGW and LHR with anything less than five clear hours between scheduled arrival and scheduled departure.

The best way to travel between airports may not be the fastest or the cheapest. There are a number of National Express coaches that run from LGW to the Central Bus Station at LHR T3, and some coaches that run from LGW North Terminal to LHR T5. Single fare is £19 per person with a travel time of about 90 minutes, depending on the state of the M25.

A car service from one airport to the other might be faster but could cost more, depending on how many are travelling, day of the week, time of day etc.

Please let us know the airlines you'll use for your flights to LGW and from LHR, when you plan to travel, to and from what destination - all of these can have some bearing on travel time between the two airports.

The airlines allows a connection that is 3 hours and this one just qualifies as it is 3 hours and 5 min, However It is very tight and the ailines has recommended I do my own research to see how we can get from LGW to LHr as fast as possible. There are 5 of us in the group but 4 of us are returning to Sydney and have a better connection as our flight leaves later. Could we organise a private transport if this would be quicker as there are 5 of us it may not work out too expensive ?

The MCT (minimum connection time) is indeed three hours, but I'd still not want to chance it. At 1700 on a Saturday in July the M25 could....well, could be busy or not, hard to predict. Since your flight from DVB arrives at LGW North if you were to take the National Express coach you'd need to book the coach from there to T5 rather than schlep across LHR from the Central Bus Station to that terminal building.

BA pax travelling from T5 must be checked in and through Security no later than T-35min before scheduled flight departure, or else they will not be allowed to fly. Because of that I think if these are the flights you've booked you will be best off using a private car service.

Have a look at www.heathrowgatwick.com www.premierairportcars.com www.londonshuttleservice.com www.gatwickairportscars.co.uk or www.londonheathrowcars.com You'll need an estate car at least, but if you have a fair amount of baggage you might need a van.

I'd only try to do this in less than 5 hours if I knew I would put on a following flight at no charge if I missed the connection. I have done the trip between the two airports in 2 hours, but also driving round that part of the M25 has on occasions taken me 4 hours.

Do you know who will be paying if you miss the connection? Is the extra cost of a walk-up, full-price ticket covered by your travel insurance if you need to do it?

BA aren't fools, its not in their interests both financially and customer relations for passengers to miss connections, and nearly all of the people on the 3 hour connections make it.

The critical factor is that there is little/no contingency and few flights do not arrive exactly on their scheduled time.

I would advise against prebooking a taxi. If your flight is late, BA may put you on a different flight, often from the same airport without need fora transfer. You'd still have to pay the taxi and they would probably clock substantial waiting time on your credit card as you never come through customs exits.

As long as you are booked through on one ticket its not the end of the world if your flight is late, BA will put you on the next flight. If your arrival flight is late go to the BA desk as sometimes they will put you on an alternative flight from your arrival airport and not need the transfer, sometimes with another carrier.

If the flight is in the evening they'll put you up at a Heathrow Hotel , often the Hilton and find a flight next day.

In crude terms it takes about an hour trom landing to clearing customs/baggage. A vehicle takes 40/45 minutes to do the Heathrow (Terminal 5) - Gatwick journey. Allow 5/10 minutes for a taxi driver to meet and escort you to the car park and on average you'll wait 10/15 minutes for the cheaper National Express Heathrow - Gatwick Bus.

Routinely you will get traffic congestion delays between 06:30 and 10:00 on the Gatwick - Heathrow direction Monday to Friday and between 15:30 and 19:00 on Heathrow - Gatwick direction. On Sundays, congestion around Heathrow both directions is normally 16:00 to 20:00.

7. Re: Gatwick airport to Heathrow?

thanks for all your replies. BA will be responsible to find a later flight and/or pay for a nights accomodation . However there is still the stress of being delayed and waiting for a flight the next day or flying a longer route to South Africa that one wants to avoid. It sounds like 3 hours is really cutting it very fine. Please anyone that has done this in that amount of time please reply. I will definitely pre book a private car but it still sounds like its a long shot to make the connection. We have to get to heathrow to fly to SA so it depends how long they close the flight off before departure.

Beyond fine - and that's without any delays at all. Even a 15 minute delay on your first leg will change it from very fine to no chance.

<< Please anyone that has done this in that amount of time please reply.>>

The fact that the 1 out of 10 who make it reply here wont help, what about the other 9 ?

<< I will definitely pre book a private car but it still sounds like its a long shot to make the connection.>>

You could spend the £100 on a private car, and still easily miss it. Why not take a more certain connection, eg longer, or cut out Gatwick altogether? Hows the overall cost looking like for this route with a private car factored in?
