any suggestions?

we'll be at renaissance chancery court, but please send suggestions regardless of proximity to this area - we will travel for a good margarita!

London is really not the place for good Mexican food.

The nearest place for decent Tex-Mex is probably Dallas. The nearest place for authentic Mexican food is probaby Mexico City.

However, here is just one of the threads I turned up after putting Mexican restaurants in the search box and pressing the little box with the magnifying glass on it.

I usually go to Cafe Pacifico when the urge gets too strong, partly because Covent Garden has other attractions. I thought the Mojitos were delicious..

I'd agree that Dallas is the nearest which is a bit sad, but looking for Mexican food in London is not unlike travelling to Portage la Prairie in Manitoba and hoping for quality fish and chips.

There is a place called Benito's Hat in Fitzrovia I want to try - am not going to compare it to the quality Sonoran style food I eat when I visit PHX but reviews are positive and the owners seem to try hard. www.benitos-hat.com for more information.

thanks for your help - i knew our options would be slim but just trying to get an idea of what we can try that's recommended - that's the one thing im missing from the states these days, and sunny weather :)

when you say the nearest place for decent tex-mex is dallas - are you referring to dallas, tx? yes, i do know great places for mexican food in the US..in various states

will let you know what we try and what we think of the places!

Surely you aren't coming to London for the sunny weather?

I really like Taqueria in Notting Hill, good Tacos although quite expensive for the size.

Also Green and Red on Bethnal Green Road does excellent Mexican drinks and OK Mexican food. Its got a bit of a hip vibe but they still let me in to eat.

Wahaca near Covent Garden is decent but as said London isn't known for Mexican food. Mexican or Tex-Mex is regarded as party night food, go to a restaurant in a big group and drink loads with the food being secondary.

Wahaca is indeed decent. Not sure how the margaritas are in the US but they are very weak in London.

You could also try El Camino under the bridge on Portobello Road. Authentic if not cheap. The food tends to be better before about 2100 when the dishes and staff seem to tire pretty quickly. Just a hundred yards north is the slightly more formal Santo, good value at lunch but definitely over-priced in the evening. Both are a good deal better than the stuff that usually passes for Mexican in London.

Hi

I can second Wahaca - i have really enjoyed the times i've been.

I have never been to Mexico so I can't comment how authentic it is however head chef and owner is Thomasina Miers who one Masterchef a few years back. She travelled extensively around Mexico (and in particular Oahaxa) and it specialises in Mexican street food (small dishes)

Also Green and Red in Shoreditch was good the last time I went. I accidently turned up on Mexican Independence day and it was full of Mexicans (and the staff were Mexican also). They had the most devine Octupus ceviche. Yum
