rain this week/ rain boots?

My daughter was wondering whether her Hunter wellies would be in order this week, given the rainy forecast, or considered ridiculous unless one is going well outside London.

Thanks.

Hi. Well being London no-one really even bothers what anyone else is wearing so while she wont look ridiculous, very few people ever wear wellies in town if it rains. They make more sense in the countryside, and even there they are not widely worn, unless you're a farmer.

Oh, thank you! I think I can catch her before she flies out of San Francisco, where these boots are (curiously!) worn by young women as much for fashion as for protection from the rain. In fact, they are pretty much sold out in this country except in bright colors like pink!

The fleeter of foot we can be, the better.

I was in London in January during the snow and I was amazed at the number of teens and twenty something females wearing Wellies. I guess they are a fashion item among that age group.

No, not really a fashion item - just that most of us don't own specialist snow gear, so walking to work in wellies when it's sowy is a reasonable compromise.

I think fly0ver's daughter will look ridiculous wearing wellies just because it's raining.

Although Ugg boots in the middle of summer with hot pants is considered fashionable in London, wellington boots certainly won't under any weather conditions.

As she is flying alone, I would hope she is older than 5.

I am laughing over all the replies. She is only flying alone to the Midwest, where I live, then we will travel together. And she is in her twenties. I did call her this morning to warn her off the wellies!

Thank you all for your advice and commentary!

If your daughter wears the Hunters, she will be spectacularly identifiable and we will all be able to say hello if we see her. If she really must wear wellies, Hunters are considered very naff and a bit pretentious in London unless you own half of Yorkshire. Owning half of an American state will not cut it with the Hunters in the same way!

Wellies are quite de rigeur at outdoor summer festivals, such as Glastonbury, when the heavens are guaranteed to open. Shops in London therefore totally sell out of wellies in June and festival goers panic about how to get their hands on (or feet in) a pair of wellies!

She would stand out in any case because she is nearly six feet tall, which invites a lot of comment, to her chagrin.
