Train Travel - Heathrow to Southampton

My wife and I are travelling to the UK next Feb and will be arriving at Heathrow about 11:45 am. We have to get to Southampton (New Forest) that evening. Can you provide me with the best way to get there by train and can I buy the tickets at Heathrow? Also on 6th March we want to travel by train to Paris. We will be staying very near Waterloo Station.

Are you wanting to go direct from Heathrow to Southampton, or via your accommodation at Waterloo? Assuming the former, the best option is probably the Rail-Air coach (bus) service to Woking, and a train to Southampton from there. You could instead take the coach to Reading and get a train from there, or the bus to Feltham and a train from there, but I think trains services from Reading or Feltham to Southampton are much less frequent.

You won't be able to buy the ticket for the train part of the journey at Heathrow - you'll have to get it in advance, or at Woking (or Reading, or Feltham).

The train from London to Paris leaves from St Pancras International station, which is served by the the Kings Cross-St Pancras tube station. From Waterloo, take the Northern line to Leicester Square and change there for the PIccadilly line, or the Bakerloo line to Oxford Circus and change there to the Victoria line. As March 6th is a Saturday, check nearer then for any planned engineering works that might affect either of those routes.

If traveling by tube from Waterloo to St. Pancras, take the Bakerloo line to Oxford Circus and then the Victoria line. The northbound platforms for both these lines are next to each other accessed by a short walk through passage. So there will be no steps or long transfer passageways to encounter.

If you are going directly from Heathrow to Southampton, you could consider a National Express coach. There are direct services from Heathrow leaving approximately every 90 minutes, and take about 2 hours 15. Based on the current timetable there is a coach departing at 1.15pm. Cost is 14.60 pounds per person. The train service via Woking RailAir is pricing at 29.80 per person for a 1 hour 49 min journey, including the change from coach to train.

For trains to Southampton, the Railair coach to Woking is the only sensible option. It's a while since I've done the journey but it used to be possible to buy through tickets at Heathrow or on the coach. You don't save anything though, and it'seasy enough to re-book at Woking Station. If your destination is in the New Forest rather than Southampton city, you might want to check if Ashurst or Brockenhurst stations - a bit further down the line - aren't nearer to where you're going. The timetable is at www.southwesttrains.co.uk. Otherwise the National Express Coach direct from Heathrow to Southampton is a good option. Southampton Coach station is about 200-300 metres level walk from the railway station.

I stand corrected. This site …airport-information.co.uk/directions-rail.h… says:

"Customers travelling from Heathrow can purchase combined coach and rail tickets from the Speedlink lounges at the airport. "

Railair coach to Woking and train to So'ton.

When you go on to Paris you should be able to make some saving by buying a through ticket from So'ton to Paris, which will include the cost of the tube journey in London.

Easiest way across London is Bakerloo from Waterloo to Oxford Circus and then Victoria line to Kings +.

No reason to use a third party site that might add extra handling and postage fees. If you want to book the tickets in advance, just go to the website of any of the train operating companies - www.eastcoast.co.uk has a reputation for accepting overseas credit cards.
