Italian Restaurants- Bloombbury area.

We are visiting London 9-11 December to see Priscilla. Staying at Montague on the Gardens and would like to eat before the show on Thursday 9th. We both love italian, would appreciate any suggestions either nr to hotel in Bloomsbury or around palace theatre area for a pre theatre meal. Many thanks

La Porchetta on Boswell Street (not far from the hotel) ain't bad at all. I think I first ended up there last year because Time Out slagged it off (and at the time I did wonder why it always appeared so popular) and since then I've always found it to have good pizzas and decent pasta dishes, not a cosy romantic place, but it's fun enough, good quality, and good value.

In case you are struggling near to the theatre, the chain of Pasta Express (an offshoot of Pizza Express) on Shaftesbury Avenue is very reliable and you could do much worse.

Just slightly in the wrong direction is Il Fornello on Southampton Row. Been there 35 years so must be doing something right even if their tiramisu is no longer the best in London.

"Il fornello" looks a really italian trattoria and cheap too, the main menu is written in a perfect italian, only the "set menu" has the "Macaroni alla Paesana" should be "Maccheroni": none italian make this mistake.

I could say the same for "Porchetta", maybe, with a cheaper wine list.. cheaper, maybe, but not absolutely cheap.....

With pizza and bruschetta is better a Beer!!

(I never visited this places I have only read the manu)

Strada is very good for a chain. In your vicinity, there's one at the Brunswick Centre and another on Great Queen Street.

I like Strada, too - reliably good food at reasonable prices.

I thought Strada was pretty good, honestly. I had a risotto alla pescatora which would give any reasonably good restaurant in Italy a run for its money, don't remember what the rest of the family ate but there were no complaints.

On Store street, in Bloomsbury, there is Paradiso. Very good pasta and pizza.
