Which part of Finchley are you staying in, or are you at Holiday Inn, Swiss Cottage which is on Finchley Road. This information will help us to give you location of a rental company.

But please bear in mind, they close early during the week and are not always open all the weekend in the suburbs whereas at airports they are.

I too have a NSW license (also a UK license). I have never had a problem with the NSW license but you would be best to get an International license. Just pop in to an RTA near you and get that sorted. Just in case. They don't cost much at all.\\I am a HERTZ man through and through and will obviously recommend Hertz.

I too use GPS for driving around the UK...

Hi,

Just replied to your other post!

If you don't have a GPS at home, buy one here and practice until you are familiar with its' functions.

GPS is not foolproof, they sometimes make mistakes - due to changes in roads and conditions.

They are simple to use, once you get used to it. Unless you are really across technology and can quickly come to grips with a new toy that you are depending upon to arrive at your intended destination. Buy one in OZ, download appropriate maps and you will enjoy using a GPS. (just plug into cigarette lighter)

You will also need hard copy maps (paper) for overall planning.

We are of similar age bracket to you, travelled 5.600 km through Europe in late '09, following the advice (above) that was gathered from this site.

You can drive in UK on a NSW/Australian driver's licence.

Check the main rental car providers' websites. Two issues:

1) The vast majority of rental cars in the UK are manual (stick shift) transmission. You can get automatics, but unless renting from an airport you'd be advised to reserve early and possibly pay more.

2) If renting from Finchley and heading south, be aware if the London Congestion Charge. You'd probably want to avoid paying it, and you definitely don't want to be stung with a non-payment fine plus the rental company's admin feed tagged on. From Finchley to "south", take the North (then South) Circular, and you'll avoid the charge zone.

All an International License does is to translate your licence into English and other languages. Whilst Australian mightn't be exactly English it's close enough to be understood.

How are you getting to Finchley, by what mode of transport?

Why not pick up at the airport?

Europcar is having a 25% off sale now for prepay, we got a great rate on an econ automatic (we prefer smaller cars).

You could do worse than travel by tube to Heathrow and get a car from there. You will have more choice, much more time flexibility and chances are you will probably get a very competitive rate. Gone are the days when renting from the airport locations was a lot more expensive than local rental stations.

Most are located on the Heathrow Perimeter Road and you could be on your way south from there very easily via the M25/M3/A30 etc.

If you do decide to take the tube to Heathrow all you need to do is get off at the relevant terminal and take the courtesy bus to the rental company's location.
