Oyster PAYG +7 day travelcard (zones 1 and 2) or oyster card

Will be in London on March 24th and leaving March 30th. I have a Heathrow Express train ticket for London Paddington to Heathrow on March 30th. I will be staying in zones 1 and 2 for sight seeing , eating, theatre etc EXCEPT for 3/4 day going to Windsor Castle and another 3/4 day going to Hampton.

Which is the best option- oyster payg or oyster payg and 7 day travel card zones 1 and 2?

And can I buy oyster payg at the self service machine at Heathrow Terminal 5?

In the Arrivals hlall at T5 you'll see a desk that sells HEX tickets and TfL tickets; the desk is just across from WH Smith and M&S Simply Food. Stop there and buy a seven day Travelcard for zones 1 and 2 (£27.80) and add an extra £ 5 of PAYG pre-pay money.

You may then use the card straight away to take the Underground to central London (you'll have a bit of pre-pay on the card to cover the fare from zone 6 to zone 2) and a bit for the journey to Hampton Court (if you travel off peak the excess fares for those journeys will be £1.40 each).

When you buy your ticket to WIndsor ask for it from the boundary of zone 2 and you'll save a few pounds. If you need to add another pound or two of PAYG pre-pay money you may do so by touching in at a ticket machine and following the onscreen instrucitons.

Note that the lifts at T5 do not have call buttons nor do they have destination buttons inside - they're all automated. The lifts from Arrivals will go down to the Underground level (you need to go just outside the terminal building to the lifts - follow the signs) and from there up to Departures then back down to Arrivals. If you miss your stop just carry on and let the lift take you, and you will get to your destination.
