Best Area for my itinerary

Hello:

I'll be staying in London April 14-19 and want to determine the best area to stay in according to my itinerary. My research leads me to believe that The City or Tower Bridge area might be best but I would love to hear suggestions.

Since this is a last-minute trip, I'm trying to book a good deal on Priceline or Hotwire and want to make sure I put myself in a good zone.

Day One:

Getting in to Heathrow @ 11 am and plan on going to see an evening performance of Hamlet at The Globe

Day Two:

Westminster Abbey

Big Ben

Jewel Tower

St. Paul's Cathedral

London Eye

Day Three:

Tower of London

British Museum

Day Four:

Hampton Court

Day Five:

Book shopping on Charring Cross Road

Portobello Markets

Changing of the Guard @ Buckingham Palace

Thanks to all! I truly appreciate your help!

Most of the places you want to go are in Westminster rather than the City, so you might look at Covent garden, Soho, Fitzrovia and maybe Bloomsbury in preference to the City as an area to stay. It doesn't matter much, though, as apart from Hampton Court and, to a small extent, portobello, everything you are seeing is pretty central, and London's excellent tube and bus system will give you easy access to everything.

Yes, location is not so important, if you get a good deal on a decent Central London hotel then go for it.

Drop a line here if you want to double check before booking - just in case it's in the sticks somewhere.

It's very comforting to hear that location doesn't matter TOO much. Just bid $155 on Priceline and got the Holiday Inn Kensington Forum. Seems nicely located and has pretty good reviews. I'd ask for thoughts but I guess i'm stuck now :)

I agree with the other posters - as long as you're somewhere within Central London (be it West End, East End, Bloomsbury, Kensington, South Bank etc etc), travel and time will not be an issue as London is so well served with public transport and is very walkable anyway.

I live in DC so I'm instantly suspicious of relying on public transportation!

Haha, well like in any city the tube does have its signal failures, delays etc (oh actually there are weekend engineering works, so look out for closed lines/stations at the weekend) but the main thing is that the tube (and buses for that matter) have such a large coverage area. In Central London you're never more than 5 or 10 mins walk from a tube station :-)

Your hotel is in a good location. Just minutes from Gloucester Road Tube Station which connects to three different lines. Close to a couple of grocery stores, Waitrose is adjacent to the tube station (they have really good baguette sandwiches you can pick up for a quick lunch) and the larger Sainsbury grocery store on Cromwell road.

There's a decent cafe very close as well tripadvisor.com/Restaurant_Review-g186338-d1…

The two local pubs (Stanhope Arms and Hereford Arms) are nothing to write home about.

Instead consider:
