American Debit cards and ATMs

Has anyone had any problems getting cash from ATMs in London using American debit cards? I've been reading about the "chip and

PIN" cards now in use in Europe and that many auto payment machines no longer accept PIN only cards.

Our plan is to travel with a minimal amount in pounds and get money from ATMs as needed. Any advice?

As far as i know as long as your pin is 4 digits (numbers not letters) long you shouldn't have any problem.

4 digit pin / no chip has always worked for me.

You might call your bank and ask for them to temporarily increase your daily ATM withdrawal limit. For example if your daily limit is $400; you will only get approx 250 pounds. To withdraw 400 pounds may be over your daily limit which is calculated in dollars.

It's come in handy for me when I needed a good amount of cash. If your

If you want, your bank may be able to issue a chip & PIN card. Citibank issued a debit Master Card chip & PIN ATM card for me last week. I am hopeful it will work when we are in London next weekend.

There were a lot of posts on this site last month by Americans stating their banks would not issue chip & PIN cards. I assumed mine wouldn't either until the branch manager told me it was an easy option, so might be worth asking if you are concerned.

And how about a six digit pin from Bank of America? Still ok?
