Whitechapel Area Advice Please

Hi there,

I'm looking to book a trip to London in October to the Whitechapel area for a Jack the Ripper Tour which starts at Aldgate East Underground Station. I'm travelling with an elderly lady and would love some information on hotels in the area (up to 4*) Which airport would be the most covenient to travel to and a local taxi/hackney company (cheapest if possible) who would pick up a party of six to eight from airport. I've only been to London a couple of times and haven't a clue of where to go!!

Your help would be greatly appreciated!!

Many thanks in advance!!

L

Do you want to spend your whole time in London around the Aldgate area? Apart from the Jack the Ripper tour, there's not a great deal touristy around that area. I guess there's Brick Lane to have an authentic Indian meal, theres a museum at the Royal London Hospital to see the elephant man, and it's within walking distance of Tower of London, and Spitalfields market, but that's about it.

It may be most convenient to arrive at Stansted airport (never thought I'd ever say that) and take the Stansted Express direct to Liverpool Street (although it's still a 46 minute journey). Stay around Liverpool Street station, there is a Travelodge between Liverpool Street and Aldgate, or an Ibis Hotel next to Aldgate East.

Somewhere round the Tower of London would seem to fit the bill

It's not exactly tourist central (apart from the Tower) but there are some reasonably priced hotels there, there's St Katherine's Dock etc and a few places of interest scattered along the South Bank towards London Bridge

Look for something in The City which will be convenient for Whitechapel and transport. Stansted to Liverpool Street (The City) is quite pricey but there is a Terravision bus that does the same destination. London City Airport is actually the nearest to The City, just 6 miles away and a taxi will cost you around £30 or take the Docklands Light Railway to either Bank or Tower Gateway.

Without knowing your budget, I would look at the Apex, Guoman Tower, Andaz (all 4 star or above) or Travelodge Liverpool Street.

Thanks for all the replies.

After looking at my options I'm swaying towards 'The Tower' Hotel on St Katherine's way. Would that be convenient for me?...

The Guoman Tower used to be a Thistle hotel until a few years ago, I have stayed there loads of times and it is a big, modern hotel overlooking Tower Bridge. I believe they are gradually renovating the place as Thistle did let it go a bit.

3 minute walk to Tower Gateway DLR station or Tower Hill Underground and maybe a 10 minute walk to Whitechapel so ideally placed for you.

If you can get a good deal on a flight into London City then you will be 25 minutes to Tower Gateway. The only London airports I would say were inconvenient would be Luton and Heathrow.

Have a look at the Hotel Indigo and Chamberlain Hotel, both in the Minories. The Ibis Hotel in Commercial Street is well situated for transport but the other two are very near Aldgate station and a handful of buses that run to and from Aldgate as well.

There is a Premier Inn in Prescot Street worth considering. If you'd like something a little different have a look at www.london-apartment-rental.com which offers very good value indeed.

I've stayed at The Tower by Guoman and was quite unimpressed. Mint Tower of London has recently opened nearby and is supposed to be good.

The Chamberlain is very nice and there might be deals at the weekend whilst The Mint does sound interesting but if budget is important (allied to location) then the Ibis mentioned above will probably be the answer.
