Is £5 enough to top up on Oyster card?

I will be in London later this week and will probably only make a couple of journeys on the Tube.

One from Victoria to Tower of London (plan to walk down South

Bank after this so not sure about return journey) and from Victoria to Kings Cross to catch the Eurostar.

So how much is a journey using the Oyster card? Would £5 cover those journeys above?

Each journey travelling only on Zone 1 will be £1.90. You can look at this link for fares

You can always top up after.

Each of those journies costs £1.90 so £5 should cover it. I'm not sure if you need a minimum amount of credit to use the system - hopefully someone else knows.

A MINIMUM £5 top-up has been introduced at ticket office windows for passengers using Oyster pay as you go.

The new requirement will help cut queues and enable staff to deal with more complex issues.

Lower value top-ups will still be available at Oyster Ticket Stops and ticket machines that accept change.

The £5 limit will not apply to passengers clearing negative balances, child Oyster photocards or cards with a valid discount entitlement.

Sorry but I've just read another post and am confused. Do I have to buy an Oyster card at £5 and then put £5 top up on it so total cost is £10?

If this is the case can the initial £5 never be used against fares?

Yes

No,

Very occasionally they might let you have small negative balance on the tube.

But you can get refund for the deposit of £5 and left monies on the Oyster.

Let me make it more clear .

When you buy the Oyster Card for £5, you are paying for £5 deposit which is refundable if you return the card at Tube station.

To clarify (if it's not clear) - you pay a £5 deposit for the card plus you add credit. At the end of your stay you can surrender your card and get the deposit and any credit left over refunded. Or you can keep the card for your next visit or give it to someone else.
