Daily trip (coming back to Leeds)

Coming back from London to Leeds I wish to visit a nice/interesting town.

But the better train fares are for direct trains! so I was wondering to catch a bus to this town then maybe a

train, not too pricy... some suggestions?

Sometimes train fares can work just as well if you buy A to B, then B to C.

On or near the East Coast Main Line, the only obvious place is Stamford. Break your trip at Peterborough and catch a branch line train there and then back to Peterborough.

Stamford is a stone built town with splendid pubs. And Burghley House is right next door.

Of course, London to Leeds is a pretty quick trip. You might consider going past Leeds to York which is a splendid and walkable city.

I would agree with the previous poster. Get the fast train from London to York (you could be there by 10am), spend the day in York and then you'll only need a short 30 min train ride to get back to Leeds at the end of the day.

Thank you very much WACT and davidblades,

I considered this option but I have to say that I know well York, where I spent few days last June, last december and so on...

My intention was to visit a new place, first at all see Oxford or Cambridge, but also small towns like these mentioned by David.

By the way I have to found a place to leave my luggages.

stamford.co.uk is a good place to start - otherwise keep Googling

If you fancied going past Leeds and past York, then Durham is a very attractive city to consider.

Stamford is a beautiful market town with cobbled streets and old buildings in natural stone. It is often used as a film set for period dramas. It has interesting boutique-type shops and some great pubs. Burghley House is also well worth visiting http://www.burghley.co.uk/

Sheffield is an industrial city with the normal high-street etc. However the winter and peace gardens are lovely in the sunshine and make for an interesting visit sheffield.gov.uk/out--about/…gardens

Sheffield and Stamford are like chalk and cheese. Lincoln is a nice place to visit for an afternoon, it has a a lovely cathedral.

Many thanks, now I'm trying to plan a stop in Oxford, going with a bus then a train with a change of 15 minutes in Birmingham. I really hope 15' are enough to reach the other train, a little delay could be a big problem, but as I sayd i'm trying....

Tipps are Welcome!!!
