Mayfair is possibly the most expensive residential area of LOndon, certainly oneof them, so Indian restaurants there are upmarket like this:

Paddington OTOH is heaving with curry houses - no doubt people will nominate dozens

Along the lines of Verity's reply, here are a few more very good Indian restaurants in or around Mayfair:

1. Benares (very upmarket): http://www.benaresrestaurant.com/

2. Masala Zone in Soho: http://www.masalazone.com/locations_soho.php

3. Rasa: rasarestaurants.com/UserPages/…

A friend, who is Indian, loves Chor Bizarre in Mayfair. Never been myself though.

I think Tamarind was the first Indian to win a Michelin star.

If you want to do the full tourist thing then a cab ride to Drummond St could be on the cards. Quite a few Indian restos there all very keen on the tourist business. I've described it as a tourist trap previously, full of mediocre establishments that are living in the past. But still the tourists flock there.

Benares is a good choice for fusion cuisine though.

Benares and Tamarind are both good restaurants but if you can go little further then Quilon is now very popular Indian restaurant and the Chef cooks for Prince Charles parties.

Cinnamon is also another good Indian.

Thanks for all of the ideas. So if Mayfair is really expensive, what about Indian near either Buckingham Palace or near the Tower. I loved the Indian food last time I was in London and look forward to trying several different restaurants this time. Overall, for Indian I usually prefer the curry houses, nothing too fancy.

I like Maharaja Tandoori at 14 Denman Street off Piccadilly Circus. They have a 3-course lunch for around 8.80. Another restaurant on the other end of the same street is Chowki, which I have not tried but have seen recommended on this forum. Both places have reviews on Trip Advisor.
