curious about this area...

We're staying with a friend on Tufnell Park Road. Can someone give me a quick description of the area? Thanks.

There's the wiki page - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tufnell_Park

Looks a well dodgy area with murderers, MPs & meeja types all living - or lived - there

Almost entirely a residential area, a bit grimy in parts but not particularly dangerous. Has some interesting pubs and clubs and quite a definite Irish element. Pretty good transport links but not many shops or attractions. Tufnell Park road is quite long so the exact character would depend exactly where on the road you're staying.

This is Tufnel park Rd from the Tube station on google street view, stroll around and you'll get a good idea of the neighbourhood.

Tufnell Park Road is over 3/4 of a mile long, one end is sort of OK and the other end isn't.

From the way you've worded your post it sounds as though your friend lives there. Surely they would be able to advise you ? Apologies if I have misinterpreted though.

the Holloway Road end of the Tufnell Park Road has a number blocks of flats (apartments) that are mostly social housing, perhaps not very pretty ... this is the end that has the bad reputation, although I personally know a good number of perfectly nice people living there ... the rest of the road is Victorian houses, most of them converted into 2-3 flats, more attractive to the eye

fine during the day, perhaps be a bit more streetwise in the evening, which come to think of it applies to most areas of London anyway

It looks like he's across from Campdale, and about 5 blocks east of the tube station.

Anyone kmow if there's a supermarket within a few blocks? I promised to prepare a few meals.

That's probably the nicest part of the road.

The nearest supermarkets are a small Sainsbury's close to Tufnell Park tube station and a large Morrisons and a large Waitrose near the junction of Tufnell Park Road and Holloway Road. There will be small corner shops closer by which will be fine for dry goods and vegetables but won't have much of a meat/dairy selection.

Bear in mind we don't cut off the end of road names in the UK like you did with Campdale Rd, if you do that when asking for directions in London you will end up in the wrong place.

I'll bear that in mind. BTW, are supermarkets called supermarkets there?

Yes, 'market' is generally used to describe open air markets with a variety of stalls.

Also, as London isn't built on a grid pattern, we don't measure distance by 'blocks'.

If you fancy exploring a little further afield for food, one of the best fishmongers in London, Steve Hatt, is only a couple of miles away.
