Day out in the country. Where would you choose to go?

We will be in London early - mid Sept. and want to visit the country for half to a full day probably on a weekend day. Where would you choose to go that is reasonably accessible and lovely?

The above two are nice. I also like the Chiltern Hills, and Surrey.

if you're here on the 3-4 September I'd suggest the Faversham Hop Festival

Arundel - via Victoria. Downland, castle and river.

Box Hill via Victoria Box Hill and Westhumble. Less obvious walking to the West for Ranmore Common (excellent views) and Poleden Lacey NT house. Explorer map for Box Hill is excellent.

Although I'm intending to go myself, unless you are big real ale fans I wouldn't recommend the Faversham Hop Festival for a "day out in the country" as thousands of people descend on the town that weekend. However on another weekend Faversham would make a good base to explore the lovely variety of nearby countryside http://www.faversham.org.uk/

BayB0y, the reason I suggested Faversham Hop Festival was for the Morris dancers and all that stuff ... thought it might appeal to a foreigner, it's certainly different to most tourist experiences

If you are in London on 4 September, you might like to consider travelling out to Oxted, Surrey, where owners of various classic buses typically dating back to the 1950s will be recreating the services that those buses used to operate around that area. Free, but good to buy a programme to help defray the owners' running costs. A day out in the country and a view of rural public transport from yesteryear in one. I second the vote for Surrey!

It is easy to get to from London on the train. You could take a train to Dorking, which is a historic market town. From there you could take a walk up onto Box Hill and also check out Denbies vineyard (the biggest vineyard in England).

Enjoy your visit!
