Heathrow Terminal Five update

This morning's Daily Telegraph reports that Terminal 5 is looking good for it's 2008 due opening date. Among the facts and figures it should be noted that the terminal will be the same size as Hyde Park (265 hectares) and will be Europe's 5th biggest airport in its own right capable of handling 30m passengers a year.

1. Re: Heathrow Terminal Five update

Does anyone know why T5 is going to get its own Piccadilly line branch extension from T123 instead of being given a station on the existing Terminal Four loop?

When the Heathrow Terminal 5 extension opens, about a third of the trains will run around the Terminal 4 loop and omit Terminal 5, while the other two-thirds will terminate at Terminal 5 and not go to Terminal 4.

The new arrangement is going to be rather confusing for visitors and it'll mean far fewer trains going to T4.

Apparently the existing T4 loop goes right by T5, so why didn't they give T5 a stop on the loop?

Interesting article, Adam. Thanks.

Rentaquote: Some tourists get confused by the four terminals now. Can't wait for what happens on the Tube when Terminal 5 opens.

So it will be the other side of where they propose the 3rd runway - amazingly good planning, NOT

"phase one of the project is scheduled to be completed and opened by April 2008 with the second phase opening in 2011"

I wonder what phase one and two are !

Well thats crazy isn't it rentaquote - like you I thought T5 would just be another station on the loop - in fact is not the reason that the T4 section is currently closed so that they can re-align the platforms to give a smooth transition into T5, if there is a seperate link then what have they been doing at T4 ??? and why ?

I presume the T5 line will be designed to be extended to T6 and that the T4 link is shut to allow the new tunnel to be joined on to the existing on and the new junction built.
