Lord K--you're scaring me...

OP-many London pubs will give you a shot glass, or taste of a beer, to help you by way of deciding. I know they do this at The Black Friar.

My advice is to find a very good real ale pub (The Market Porter springs to mind) and try a few as suggested above.

Some pubs (tied houses) will just serve beers from one brewery - with perhaps one guest. But - if they're good (say the nearby Royal Oak in Tabard St) then these pubs can be good too.

Check out The Good Beer Guide.

Anything from Fullers (London Pride, Discovery Ale, Honeydew etc) and Young's (London Gold). Fullers are local (based in Chiswick), Young's aren't as local as they used to be, they now brew in Bedford about 25 miles north of London.

What mikey said. Virtually all pubs will sell at least two "real ales" (live unpasteurised beer in the British tradition, ie not fizzy lager type), and many pubs specialise in this type of beer and will sell 5, 6 or more. A lot of this type of place will serve you a small taster before you "invest" in a whole pint

There are hundreds of breweries in the UK and you'll find a wide range on offer. Start here and prepare yourself!:

Also, if you're a keen drinker and are here for a week, try and find a "local" where you can become a "regular" of sorts. In those circumstances you might well find yourself just drinking one beer of a lower strength, a "session" bitter. My local always has at least 5 real ales available - but one chap never drinks anything other than Harveys Best !

Such beers (mine is Dark Star Hophead) will typically be 4% strength or under. I know you guys generally favour drinking less but stronger beer - 7% IPA's seemed the thing on my last trip to the US - but when in Rome...

This will assist : http://www.sirc.org/publik/pub.html

And there (no offence to any posters intended) is precisely why you're best off tasting a few I reckon, because personal taste varies as much as the different styles and makes of beer you'll find over here

To me, Old Peculier is OK, but I wouldn't cross the road to drink Guinness or Hobgoblin; and I'd actively cross the road to avoid Waggle Dance or Banana Bread beer

There are dozens of styles of beer, and hundreds of different actual brews; so get tastin' :D
