What to wear to the theatre?

We're on a theatre break to London soon, and have good tickets for Phantom. I'm wondering if we'd be out of place wearing jeans there, or would we be expected to be a bit more dressed up for the occasion?

Thanks, Jaynie

Jeans will be fine - I am sure you will not be wearing those used for gardening! People tend to wear a range of clothes in London theatres. There will be some people dressed up to the nines, but we always wear whatever we feel comfortable in - often jeans but with something smarter on top. Enjoy - it is a great musical!

My daughter only ever wears jeans, top and trainers to theatre, always sits near the front and has never been frowned upon for being wrongly attired.

wear whatever you feel comfortable wearing but bear in mind that theatres in the west end can often become very stuffy and hot.

Purple C is right: we saw the Phantom at the end of august, and it was really, really hot.

Enjoy the show, it's simply wonderful!

Most people dress up a little, collar and trousers for the men, nice top or dress for the ladies, but jeans are also seen commonly. I wear spats and a fedora.

We decided to visit a show on the spur of the minute the other week - so we went as we were! Some of our group had on jeans and t shirts, some leggings and long tops - weren't out of place at all! Lots of similar dressed people, and also lots of people dressed up for the night out.

Have a shower and put some clean clothes on - it's not much fun sitting next to someone who has been hitting the tourist sights / shopping and comes straight to the theatre (sometimes with their shopping)

It would be a shame if you went in jeans. It is what you make it -- and if you make it lousy, then that is what it is. The theatre is a wondrous event, and you should make it wondrous for you too.

Of course, in 2011, your money is too valuable to the theatre, and they wouldnt say anything if you showed up half naked
