Transport from Gatwick Airport to Earls Court area

WE have a total of 11 persons traveling. 9 are college students. 2 are adults.

What is the cheapest way to get from Gatwick to Earls Court?

If we take the train from Gatwick to Victoria Station, how much is the train fare for the students? And how much is each taxi from Victoria to Earls Court?

Thank you.

How much is the train

There are direct trains to West Brompton on the edge of Earls Court, though not as frequent as the Victoria trains.

Would work out cheaper though.

Depending on where exactly your hotel is in Earls Court it could be anything from 50m to 1 km from West Brompton station.

There are no student discounts available on the trains without a rail card, which isn't worth the students buying for their short visit.

The cheapest train journey is a Southern train from Gatwick to London Victoria at £9 (not suggested during rush hour, as the train will be standing room only and there will be no room for 11 people + their luggage). The non-stop Gatwick Express is available at £14. From Victoria, you can take the District line (tube) to Earls Court for £3.

Note that you are looking at a total of £12 - £17 per person to take public transport from Gatwick to Earls Court. To be honest, I would instead look into private transfers and hire a mini-bus to transfer your group from the airport to the hotel. I think it would be more cost-effective, and certainly less stressful. Some info is available here - gatwick-airport-guide.co.uk/taxi-transfer.ht… - or you can Google Gatwick airport transfers.

Thank you for your reply.

Any idea what the cost is for the train from Gatwick? And is there a discounted fare for students? Is there some office I could email or telephone that could help me?

I would be tempted to book a transfer, it is going to work out around the same price or cheaper and much less hassle.

Further to handfordr's post, trains leave Gatwick for West Brompton every hour, at 37 mins past the hour. Fare is £9.

For only two people coming into Gatwick, then needing transport to Earls Court hotel, do you recommend we take the direct train to Vic. station, then maybe a taxi to the hotel in Earls Court? We will be tired from overnight flight and just want to do whatever causes the least amount of thinking/hassle. And where do you get the tix once in the airport for the train? Do you need lbs. for machine or can you get tix with ATM card from US?

If the hotel was near to West Brompton station and you arriving midweek after around 9.00am then you could take the Southern train to West Brompton from where it could be just a short walk.

Otherwise the easiest and quickest way would be The Gatwick Express to Victoria and then a taxi which shouldn't cost more than about £15.00.

There are ticket booths and machines that accept cash (the website says The Gatwick Express machines also accepts US dollars) and credit cards at Gatwick Airport station which is attached to the South Terminal. It's an easy transfer by a monorail type train should you be landing at The North Terminal.

If you are still unsure please let us know the name of your hotel so that we can give better directions.

Thank you adamhornets. We are staying at Twenty Nevern Square. I like the idea of the express train to Victoria station, then a taxi for the quick, easy and farily economical route to hotel after such a long flight. We were thinking to bring some lbs. over from US for tips/train fare and such, then using ATM and travelers checks once there.

Since you are the local London expert, how do you think we should get to the Eurostar station from hotel when leaving London. We are going to Paris for second part of our holiday. Thanks in advance for all your help.

Twenty Nevern Square is a nice hotel, quite close to Earl's Court tube.

To get from your hotel to Waterloo, just get any eastbound District or Circle line to Embankment, then change there to a southbound Bakerloo or Northern line train for the one stop to Waterloo.

There are a couple of banks with ATMs on the Earl's Court Road and a bureau de change, but the latter will charge you a commission to change currency.

You might find it easier to use the Warwick Road exit from Earl's Court station, too, as your hotel isn't far from there. Turn right out of the station, then the second turning on the right is Nevern Square.

Thank you TravellerPlus. If we take express train to Vic. station from Gatwick and wish to take the tube to Earls Court instead of a taxi, do we catch the tube from Vic. station and get tix in station or must we exit Vic. station in order to find the tube? This would be too much work on little sleep I'm sure but if it's super easy, I'm willing to try that route for hotel transport. Thanks also for the info about getting to Waterloo.
