Carphone Warehouse, Phones 4U and Argos shops all sell inexpensive PAYG phones from about a fiver each, plus £10 - 15 of talk time added.

Rates will vary from one provider to another, but you shouldn't pay more than 3 - 5p per minute for calls to North America.

Do make sure to tell them you mainly want it for international phone calls or the rates wil be much higher than what TP quotes.

Also worth knowing that unlike in the USA, there is no charge on mobiles for incoming calls so if the other end is happy to pick up the tab, you'd have no need to pay for the call yourself.

Ive used the Camel payg plan from orange my last two trips. card is free and i think calls are 6p/min and if you buy a certain amount they will add a certain amount of additional/free/included minutes.

I think we were paying 2p a minute to North America last year with Lebara, purchased at a Carphone Warehouse.
