Train prices to Southampton & Bournemouth

Does anyone have any idea why the train fare prices from Bournemouth to London are half the price of from Southampton to London when Southampton is closer to London?

Bournemouth to London Advance fare: £14.50

Southampton to London Super Off-Peak Day Single fare: £34.10

You can get advance tickets from Southampton to Waterloo (and indeed from Bournemouth) from as little as £1 by using MegaTrain. A limited supply of tickets and available from 6 weeks out.

Megatrain/Megabus is a cheap advance ticket site owned by Stagecoach, the owner of South West Trains.

Thanks people. Megabus does indeed have cheaper seats from Southampton to London but for departures in the next couple of weeks rather than six weeks out. Sadly none of them are on a Sunday. Drat.

PaulDuncan: I wasn't trying to compare like for like. Just wanted the cheapest fare possible.

The reason for the difference is that Southampton - London is regarded as a commuter route and commuter routes <<tend>> not to offer cheap advance fares. Bournemouth - London is regarded as 'long-distance' - and long distance routes <<tend>> to have cheap advance bookings

For a cheaper train journey (though a much longer one) specify a route of 'via Barnham' £15.90 Southampton - London superoffpeak day single. Can be bought on the day at the same price.

Hmm. You did ask why Southampton was more expensive.

LOL, yes, that is true, but regardless of what names they have for the different fares was more interested in why it was cheaper to travel from Bournemouth than Southampton. dzug1 has provided the most logical explanation and I have learnt about Megabus so all is good. :)

Oops, Bucky just had another wee wiggle.

Because, regardless of the names of tickets, you weren't comparing like with like!

You can travel by coach from London to Southampton or Bournemouth and, depending on day and time of day, the price of the coach can be 20% of the rail fare, eg, £9.50 as opposed to £45, and the time taken can be about the same. I did this recently and found the coach clean, modern and fast with a toilet, a friendly driver and various plug in sockets for my ipod etc, lights and AC outlets - like a good quality plane. Just check the specific journey comparison as coaches take longer in the rush hour and trains can take longer at weekends.

The names of the tickets are important.

Advance is booked train only, no break of journey, and must be bought in advance.

Off peak single is any train at the off peak time, break of journey allowed, can be bought on the day of travel.

You also have to allow for historical fare illogicalities and the butterfly flapping its wings in China.
